After a rough start to the fourth grade, Mitsuru Numai has a difficult time opening up to anybody until new kid Ryuhei Sasagawa forces his way into his life. Ryuhei, meanwhile, is having a pretty rough childhood himself, more or less single-handedly raising his younger brother, Tooru. The two soon meet Sho Tsukioka, who isn't really interested in making any new friends as he tries to figure out his own personal identity crisis. And then there is Hiroshi Kuronaga, a loud firey pint-sized kid that really wants to make friends, but just can't seem to keep any.
Together the four make the Numai Gang, and together they change each other's lives in ways unimaginable. Things were very different in their pre-Kiriyama world, but they would always remember those days fondly.
