Brushing the shattered glass off himself, Steve stands up, puts the sceptre back in the case and looks around. There’s no sign of his double, and Steve doesn’t understand how he’s ended up back with the sceptre when his double was so determined to get it. There’s an echo in his ear and he’s reminded he’s still linked to the rest of the team. “Stark? Anyone? What’s happening?”
“Tony had a minor incident,” comes Natasha’s voice in his ear. “He’s being looked at. Where are you?”
“Lower floor, I’ve still got the sceptre.”
“I thought that was going with SHIELD?”
“So did I.”

“I hate that,” he says when Tony raises an questioning eyebrow at him. “I’m not that.”
“Not what? Honey, you gotta help me out here,” Tony says. “Not a mind reader.”
“All American,” Steve says with a huff. “It’s like everyone forgets about my parents.” Putting his book down on the floor, Steve swings his legs round to the ground and sits up. “If they meant all American as what I think it should mean, then that would be one thing, but they don’t.” Rubbing his hand over his face, Steve shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter, I’m being—”
“It does,” Tony interrupts, pressing his toes against Steve’s thigh. “If it matters to you, it matters.”

Summary
“Yeah, right, okay.” Tony pauses for a second before he strips his shirt off and stands there trying to quell his anxiety at the thought of someone seeing the mess of scars around the arc reactor. The arc reactor, he—well, it is what it is, and the only reason he tends to hide it is because he knows there’s too many people who would want to take it. But the scars are different. No one’s seen them, except Obie, and the less Tony thinks about that, the better. Tony knows they’re ugly, there’s no getting away from the gnarled marks curling out from the arc reactor across his chest, and he hates how vulnerable they make him feel.
Steve hasn’t said a word since Tony took his shirt off, his head tilted as he looks at Tony’s skin, and the longer the silence goes on, the more Tony wants to pull his shirt back on and leave.
“I can work with that,” Steve says finally. “It’s not a problem.”

“Been a hell of a year.”
“It has,” Steve agreed. “But we made it through. That’s something.”
“And at least I know Christmas won’t be spent trying to take down a terrorist this year.”
Steve laughs softly, watching the lights from the tree play over Tony’s face, making his eyes seem even warmer than they usually are. He’s not an idiot, he’s lived with this low level attraction to Tony for years, but ever since Tony came back to the team it’s grown. After Ultron, Steve missed Tony without even realising it. He’d come visit, bringing new tech and uniforms, and stealing off Steve’s plate when they all ate, but it wasn’t the same.
And then Steve got kidnapped and Tony put the suit back on to lead the team in rescuing him.

“I didn’t know you lived here,” Tony says before Steve can jump to conclusions. Not that Steve would. Or, at least, the Steve he used to know wouldn’t. “I retired, and Rhodey, he picked the place without me knowing, if it’s a problem, then—”
“Why would it be a problem?”
“Because I was an asshole.”
Steve smiles, a soft curve of his mouth that Tony was never able to resist. “You had a problem,” Steve says softly. “I don’t blame you.”

Tony opens his mouth to argue that that’s not how this works, but he snaps it shut at the realization that Steven Grant Rogers is fucking with him. That twinkle in his eye has accelerated into a full-on glimmer, and the ends of his lips are twitching. Jesus, he hates this man. Or maybe he wishes he did. Tony can’t really tell the difference anymore.
