Shinsou is five the first time he wakes up with thin jagged lines running up his arms. And it doesn’t hurt, but they are a bright angry red, and all he can do is cry as his mother comes into his room, as she looks at the marks, first in shock and then with a small smile. She cradles him, tells him that he’s lucky. Not everyone has a soulmate.

He turns the sink handle until hot water spews from the faucet. The heat burns and stings, but he keeps rubbing his hands together trying to wash the blood off. He can’t. Never will.
