Below his feet, the floor seems to shift, sending him tumbling into the railing. He gasps, inhaling a spray of sea water. Milton grabs the back of his coat, hauling him back.
“Woah, boy,” Milton grunts, like Jack had just tripped over a curb and not almost fallen to his death. The wind blowing through their clothes and hair is freezing enough. Jack can’t imagine how cold the swirling water must be. The fall itself would kill him, too - the water was at least 15 meters down.
“Thank you,” Jack says, and brushes water off his lapels.
