Summary
There is always a brief moment before finalizing these kinds of decisions where everyone sobers up and considers whether or not it is right. But they have colonies disappearing and the threat of something they do not even fully understand looming over their heads. They will allow the ends to justify the means for now. It has worked to varying degrees of success before, and right now they have nothing to lose.

Rizka sniffles, their shoulders shaking, and they bat their big teary eyes at Kane.

His grin is forced, angry, savage. "Don't thank me yet, queenie."
Rizka, Kane, and Nero are stopped by at a rest station to refuel and repair their ship. Rizka causes some trouble. Nero thinks it's amusing.
Kane doesn't take so lightly to it.

With Tetrax acting as their guide, it soon becomes clear that not all is as it seems. This follows on from The Incubator - you should read that first to understand what's going on in this.
It would not be long, now, though; she could hear the whirr of wings and looked up to the entrance near the ceiling far above her to see the first incubator enter, carried firmly by a worker. It was wrapped in webbing and seemed dazed, sedated, as it was brought down to the floor below her perch on the wall. Another worker brought a feeding tube down and pushed the end into the incubator’s mouthparts, securing it into place with webbing that wrapped around the back of the incubator’s head (but left its flat eyes and stubby triangular breathing appendage free) before using the cutting implement on her back leg to slice the webbing wrapped around the incubator. The new mixture flowed along the feeding tube, a pretty pale blue liquid that the incubator swallowed almost reflexively, though its flat eyes were wide and it scented of apprehension.
Earth has been invaded by an insect race who find humans also produce the perfect nutrients for the newly-hatched young.
