Summary
It isn’t that being caught exercising in the halls is actually embarrassing; Camilla knows that there’s more to health than medicine, and keeping fit requires lifting more than just books. What’s embarrassing, what’s down-to-the-marrow humiliating, is that she actually has the time to exercise. She should be helping her necromancer achieve lyctorhood, not finding exciting new places to do squats.
It’s some small consolation, perhaps, that there’s at least one other cavalier whose necromancer has seen fit to turn her loose on Canaan House without a duty to fulfill. That the other cavalier is Gideon is, well, less consoling.
---
In an alternate universe where things are progressing as the Emperor Undying intended, Camilla and Gideon find themselves with a lot more time on their hands and a lot less supervision from their necromancers. This could be the start of a beautiful bromance.

“You, however... We have not taken great pains to conceal you from the world only to let this advantage gather dust. It’s about time we use that secrecy, hm? No, don’t give me that face, Cam.” Camilla schools her face back into impassiveness from the expression she hadn’t realised she had allowed to cross her brow. “I have spoken of you in every letter I have sent the Duchess.”

Summary
“You owe it to me,” Camilla says, which is unfair, because Palamedes is nearly as devoted to her as she is to him, and it’s quite rude to tug on the strings of their friendship to puppet him into doing what she wants, but it’s effective.
“You could have left here at any time,” Palamedes reminds her again.
Camilla wouldn’t have. Camilla never does. She’s supposed to stay by his side, so stay by his side she will. And she’s usually a partner in his research, because her mind’s nearly as sharp as the daggers she so favors, but even when he gets all obsessive and caught up in his own mind as this, she doesn’t leave him.
“I could have,” she says, and they know each other well enough that she doesn’t have to say anything else.

Summary
"How do you know Nonagesimus has gone somewhere dangerous?" asked Isaac. "Have you wired some kind of alert system?"
"It's, uh. It's on the schedule," said Gideon. "I just... forgot. Because of the bread."
Nobody was convinced by this, least of all Gideon.
"It's a Ninth House thing," Gideon went on, backing away with increasing desperation. This was a slightly more plausible explanation, if only because nobody wanted to look too closely at what fell under the awful skeletal-ribbed and rotting umbrella of Ninth House things. "Gotta go—!" And she was out the door, gone.
But it wasn't a Ninth House thing, except inasmuch as it was happening to the only two representatives of the noble and decrepit Ninth House on this quite literally godforsaken rock. Gideon knew Harrow had gone somewhere dangerous—knew that Harrow was back in the lab where they had only just completed a horrible trial—because she could see it, clear as day: an awful overlay on her vision of that terrible dangerous room and a pair of terrible dangerous hands drawing some kind of ward next to the plinth.
The hands were definitely Harrow's.
This was definitely a problem.

“I have no idea what any of that means,” said Palamedes. Another tally on Cam’s ever-growing list of ways in which he failed as her adept, and a shortcoming he intended to correct at the earliest possible opportunity. It was a long list (1. insufficient caloric intake, 2. misplacing his spectacles, 3. losing pencils, 4. wearing mismatched socks to a Faculty meeting, 5. hogging the blankets). One of these days, he might write it down. She’d get a kick out of it.

Summary
Camilla Hect had trouble sitting still; she liked to rock back and forth, chew on soft things, tap her fingers together in specific patterns. She loved certain textures and could run her hands along them for several minutes at a time, but felt a nearly physical pain at having to touch others for even a second. Bright lights hurt her eyes. Heat made her feel like she was dying. Being in the noise of a crowd robbed her of her ability to speak and made her want to curl up in a ball and cry. She felt things very, very strongly, but her face and voice almost never matched that—more often than not, they were perfectly neutral no matter what she was feeling.
Camilla Hect was autistic.

Summary
Camilla made a noise halfway between a grunt and a moan. The queasiness had passed for the moment, but she still felt like chewed-up wallpaper paste, weak and vaguely blurred around the edges. “Could just be a reaction to those new vitamin additives.”
“No way to tell without gathering additional evidence,” the Warden agreed sagely. “You wouldn’t happen to know whether you are currently experiencing elevated temperature, heart palpitations, and a tell-tale skin discolouration on your back and chest?”
