Summary
"Things used to be simpler. Worse. But simpler."
***
Years later, the world is still struggling to find its footing - and so is Katara. Old traditions and visions stand in the way of new developments and a healthier, happier world. Sometimes, people themselves stand in their own way, too.
Katara leaves after years by the Avatar's side, to find her own way. She goes to a place she has been avoiding for a while now."Why and how that place became Zuko’s residence was a question she has been mulling over for several weeks now. "
***
Fully canon-compliant until the very end of ATLA, and then I ignore every post-canon thing with a few exceptions. Katara deserved better. Zuko/Katara made more sense narratively. This is my canon now.

Summary
Written in both Zuko's and Katara's perspective. More realistic-ish take on what could possibly happen after the war in the romances, politics, and society.
Lots of slow tension build up. Action and adventure. Descriptive world writing that hopefully remains true to the original animation.
***
Whether they were willing to admit it or not, the last Agni Kai with Azula had sealed the bond between Zuko and Katara.
The war has passed, and Fire Lord Zuko navigates his role to lead his Nation into peace while stamping down on treason. He may be succeeding as the leader of his country, but strains to find common ground with Mai.
Katara embraces the new world, supporting Aang as the Southern Water Tribe’s Ambassador traveling together like old times… or are things just too different now?
It will be years before the Fire Lord and the Waterbender find their tides of destiny crashing once more into each other.
For their lives are inevitably woven in fire, waves and ice. -

Summary
It was a brilliant plan, all things considered.
On paper and in the eyes of the public, they were a charming if oddly mismatched couple who somehow found love despite their differences. A fairy tale come to life, sighed the more romantic members of Ba Sing Se society.
So it was almost a shame that Katara's courtship with Prince Zuko was ultimately nothing more than an act - otherwise, they might have been a perfect match, if not the perfect partners in crime.

Written for Zutara Month 2022 and shamelessly influenced by both Pride and Prejudice and Bridgerton.

Summary
They all look a bit weary, a bit rough around the edges, a bit scared. But every single one of them has a look of determination on their faces, of the grim resolve that they will see this through to the end, no matter the cost. They will either emerge victorious or die fighting.
Anything less would not be fair to the world.
(Then again, why is it on them to save the world from tyranny? On a group of teenagers and barely adults? That isn't fair.
But the world has never cared about fairness. At least not in the last century, and fuck it, someone needed to make a stand rather sooner than later.)

Another smile. Another kiss. And as she lays there, wrapped up in Zuko's warmth, Katara remembers a saying: love is brightest in the dark. And here is the thing - times are dark; they are living through darkness. But she has found her light, and she will not let it go if it's the last thing she does.
—
or: the Water Tribes are hell-bent on revenge. Sokka flees with the Avatar in tow, committing treason. Katara, tasked with hunting her brother down, stands between her tribe and her family.

Summary
In a world where the Avatar was killed during the airbender genocide, the cycle has been repeating for one hundred years. Each time, the Avatar is hunted and murdered by the tyrannical Fire Lord who has expanded his reign to most of the world and declared himself Emperor.
Katara thought she was someone with unbreakable hope, but this world—this place—its devoured her. Surrounded by her enemy on every side, she has no one to turn to. The Fire Lord uses her to fix his wounded soldiers, and then she returns to the darkness of her cell. It's been seven years since she last saw the snow in the South Pole. Seven years since she's seen her brother. With no one to train her true power, she feels helpless. She's only ever around water to heal—she's not a fighter. She has no way out.
Until she sees him again. The boy with the scar—she saved his life when she was twelve. It was how they discovered her abilities. And he may be the one to finally restore her hope. He may be her way out. If only she hadn't gone and fallen in love with him along the way.

Summary
"What are you afraid of?" Katara asks.
"That I would consume you." Zuko replies, his normal impassiveness fallen as he keeps his arms to himself in fear that his rage would not only consume him but Katara.
"What makes you think you haven't?" Katara steps forward, her hand flying up to his cheek making him shiver with the contact.
"Don't—" he says.
"Why?"
"Because once you allow me," Zuko's eyes narrowed onto hers, locking her gaze "—I would never stop. I am consumed by you. I am yours."

Four years later, the war is still at large and the fire nation has taken over. While the Avatar is struggling to come to terms with the loss to the fire nation, Sokka is debating whether or not Aang is the real Avatar and Katara is losing sense between herself and The Painted Lady.
And Zuko, will do whatever for the one who he’d burn for.

Summary
"I like to think that the spirits had written their love story in nature. The way the moon will always reflect the shine of the sun, the way a fire will always get put out by a splash of water. It was always written in the stars, they were just too stubborn to see it, or too occupied in fighting against it. They were always the two sides of the same coin, the two halves of one gem, Tui and La, moon and sun, day and night."
Or: The evolution of Zuko and Katara's relationship post-war and how they navigate the changing world with their ever-constant feelings.

Summary
Girl meets boy. Boy meets girl. Boom, they fall in love and live happily ever after. That's how the story goes. But this isn't a fairytale and Katara isn't a princess. She's just a regular, degular, shmegular girl. And the prince? Well, he's caught between trying to find himself and continuing a legacy.
A modern, nonbending, AU where Zuko is good, Ozai isn't an evil dictator, and Azula isn't mentally ill or on the verge of a breakdown. Uncle Iroh is still Uncle Iroh.

"So you're going to stay with him and wait with the hope that one day there will be a magical moment when you'll see him and it will all make sense."
That was probably what she had thought she was going to do, even though she hadn't put it into words, the way Zuko did just now. "What if it does?" Her voice is small.
His isn't. "What if it doesn't?"
