Summary
After the battle at the Northern Water Tribe, Sokka is captured by Zhao.
It's not incredibly ideal, however, he reckoned he could escape if given the right motivation. Most of which is provided by his cellmate, Prince Zuko, the boy they've been fearing for months. The Fire Prince who has spent the last few months of Sokka's life miserable, trying to keep him, his sister and the all-powerful twelve year old boy alive. It's his rotten luck to be locked up with Zuko, he's only going to foil his plans wherever they go.
At least, that's what Sokka thought.
The thing about war is, the smoke rises so high, so thick, things aren't as clear as they once were. Sokka believed all Fire Nation was evil, that it was only capable to destroy. All he saw when he looked at the Fire Nation was the fire in their eyes. But what could possibly happen when he starts to feel the fire in the heart of one, golden-eyed boy, who is more than he appears?
Sokka's got a lot of learning to do, as does Zuko. Slowly, they're finding that as long as they're together, they might be able to take on anything.

Summary
There was a hand on his back, softly rubbing a soothing pattern against his shoulders. Zuko flinched away from the touch as much as he could while his stomach rebelled. It wasn't enough and the hand stayed where it was.
It took a few minutes before he was able to stop dry heaving. When it was clear that nothing else was going to come up, Zuko rolled himself fully back onto the sleeping bag. His head hurt, it hurt a lot. Usually, his head felt fine after sleeping but today his brain felt expanded in his skull, pushing up against the inside and mashing all the squishy bits together.
He wanted to get up, wanted to get away from whoever was tucking him back into the warmth of his sleeping bag. He whined low in his throat as the hands nudged his arms into the bag, the sound leaving his throat with a rasp. His eyes weren't focusing on anything, which wasn't out of the norm for his left side, but his right eye was fine. He should be fine. He was fine.
(He wasn't fine.)
“Are you okay?” A deep voice asked.
(Zuko becomes a middle child, everyone is horrified by the new information that comes to light, and Hakoda wonders who he has to kill to make this scarred boy happy.

Summary
Before Sozin’s reign, people traveled everywhere. They adventured outside of their kingdoms. And, sometimes they fell in love.
Ursa was a descendant of Avatar Roku, but she was also an earth bender. Most of all, she was also lonely.
She remained lonely until Zuko was born on a cool evening around midnight.
Azula was born two years later, as the summer sun rose. She was a bit fussier, but still a beautiful baby girl.
Izumi was different.
~~~~~~~
Instead of being a Beifong, Toph was born in the Fire Nation as Izumi, the third child to Ozai and Ursa.This goes through the entire series, with this change.
Summary
Zuko was banished for daring to have compassion. He was branded a traitor and cast aside for daring to care for his people, for the people of the Fire Nation who had no choice but to fight the war his ancestors had started, and that was not a lesson he would ever forget.
His father intended to teach him respect. Instead, he taught him the merits of treason. And wasn’t it convenient that the men and women aboard the Wanyi were virtually all demoted to the ship for insubordination and/or failure to follow orders?
Zuko knew exactly what he was risking by speaking up in that war room, and if his father thought that banishment would keep him from rescuing the 41st Division, then he was sorely mistaken. Come to think of it, this had one of Azula’s poorly presented gifts written all over it. “You care about them enough to fight an Agni Kai over them?” she’d ask him with a scoff. “Then go fight to save them instead, you dumb-dumb.”
Dragons were fiercely protective of their hoard, and Zuko? Zuko had claimed the citizens of the Fire Nation as his before he was capable of producing a single flame.
Summary
After the events of War Crimes, Sokka and Zuko have escaped Zhao’s warship and are fleeing across the Earth Kingdom. As well as unfamiliar terrain, they have to navigate their shared trauma, work out where they fit into the war, and their place in each others lives.
Sokka is aware that being friends with the enemy is going to bring complications, but he probably should have guessed that being friends with Zuko in particular, was going to be a bit like dunking your head repeatedly into a bucket of angry Fire Ferrets.
Katara is also grappling with the confusion of befriending an enemy, something that doesn’t prove as difficult as she had expected with the bond of shared, furious grief bridging old wounds. (Learning a new way to look at her bending doesn't hurt either)
Azula, struggling with the Fire Lord’s mistrust, encounters a few nasty surprises and has to make some difficult decisions. Luckily, she is a great deal better at making sensible choices than her brother.
Her father may have made a slight tactical error.
