    Summary

…she had regained what I thought she had lost forever, the magical sadness which had drawn me to her, the thwarted look that had seemed to say, “Surely I was made for some other purpose than this?”
    —Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

This was a response to a half-jokey tumblr prompt for a late 18th-Century fanfic on Marianne x Hélöise. Post-canon. Faithful to the world of the film.

    August 1, 1794

It is five years after the French Revolution and nearly two years into the new Republic. The king and queen are dead. Marat is dead. Robespierre is dead. The Terror is over but the “women’s clubs” that the Jacobins outlawed remain shuttered. The price of bread is beginning to stabilize.

Marianne has found accommodation in this new order and is still gainfully employed as a painter. She has maintained this largely by being politically flexible with the leaders of competing factions in the National Convention.

Work is work. She still takes on a small number of pupils and works out of an atelier on rue du Chaume (now the rue des Archives), in what was the aristocratic Marais. The neighborhood is going through what we would now call a bit of transition.

    Summary

It would have been sufficient had Héloïse looked at her, and nothing else. But instead she came forward, in a few halting steps, until Marianne could smell her, taste the sweetness of her breath.
“Marianne,” she said, simply, and Marianne understood.

Seven years later, Marianne returns to Milan.

    "Sophie, I'm sorry..."

    "What?!?-"

Marianne cuts her off, placing the cards down for everyone to see: a full house, queens over nines.

"Because we're going to America!" she exclaims.

A.k.a the Titanic AU you didn't know you needed.

The year is 1912, and the RMS Titanic sails its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Héloïse, sailing away from her freedom, to a country she does not know and an arranged marriage she protests. Marianne, sailing away from poverty and struggle, with her companion, Sophie, and their few belongings. Fate will draw them together, but can it stop the forces keeping them apart?

    Summary

Marianne is an art student moving into a new college dorm room, and desperately looking for inspiration for her art. Héloïse doesn't really want a new roommate, there's many things she doesn't want in life. Now that they've found each other they're certainly going to complicate each other's lives, but it might also be the best thing that's happened to them. They could be each other's new biggest problems, or solve together all their other problems.

    Summary

    “Turn around.”

When Marianne hears that voice, all air gets knocked out of her lungs. She freezes, completely paralyzed just one step away from the exit of the theatre. She could just walk away, pretend she imagined the voice–maybe she did after all those years–and go on with her life without the agony that comes with clinging on to hope. But she cannot resist, like she couldn’t before. So, Marianne turns around, and when she does, her eyes fill with tears.

    (Or, Héloïse sees Marianne too.)

I know someone who kisses the way a flower opens, but more rapidly.

—from “I Know Someone,” by Mary Oliver. Felicity: Poems (2015)

Short AU. More Adèle x Noémie pillow-talk explorations. Some very minor angst but a lot more waffy / sexy.

The principal actors from Portrait de la jeune fille en feu / Portrait of a Lady on Fire, in a relationship. Paris, the summer, Adèle Haenel's apartment in the 10ème.

Same continuity as my other Noémie x Adèle fics Soyez sérieuse / The Anniversary and Chanmé

    Summary

    “The sublime grants pure feeling.”
—Goethe, on describing the sight of the alps, in a 1778 letter to Charlotte von Stein.

    A short tale of transitions,
    told in fragments:
    Between object and subject.
    Between regarding and being observed.
    Between thinking and feeling.
    Between listening and being heard.

“vous avez rêvé de moi?,” ou “vous avais rêvé de moi?” Between the present indicative and the imperfect indicative.

Or if you like, the change from minor to major key in Vivaldi’s “Summer: III. Presto,” that plucky violin solo in the middle that has Héloïse smiling triumphantly through her tears.

But as this is a happy Noémie Merlant x Adèle Haenel AU, the heavy notes in G Minor that resume at the end of that piece don’t ever come back.

Same continuity as my other Noémie x Adèle AU Chanmé

Short AU one-shot involving relationship between actresses playing Marianne (Noémie Merlant) and Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) Portrait of a Lady on Fire / Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Based on real-world events (the Toronto International Film Festival), real locations and real destinations but a wholly speculative love story that existed in illustrated form on my tumblr.

My interpretation of what would have happened if, when Héloïse asked Marianne if she was asking her to resist her marriage, instead of Marianne saying "no" she would have said "yes", asking Héloïse not to marry the man she was supposed to.

    Summary

Eight years after they parted ways, Héloïse and Marianne find each other in Milan.

Caught in a sunbeam, Héloïse was a stern black column in the doorway, dressed head-to-toe for mourning. Her hair, nun-like, was hidden behind a neat little waterfall of lace.
