That’s fine; he can deal. He’s an alpha after all, and while there are rules to courting when one’s mate is human, he knows he can prove his worth. Except no one told him how hard it would be. And Steve is really bad at this. Really, REALLY bad.
After a couple of rough years, Bucky Barnes is back on his feet and ready to start a new phase of his life. He’s been given a second chance and while Lehigh might not be as big as NYC, he loves his apartment, chonk of a cat, new job and crazy neighbors.
Except things have started to get weird. Maybe it’s because of all the werewolves in town, although he’s never had a problem before. Yet he can’t help but notice things have changed, with people staring at him wherever he goes, asking him strange questions, and stealing his lunch.
And it all started when a watermelon was left on his doorstep.

Bucky doesn't want to talk about life in LA. Or the icy numbness in his chest. Or how shattered he is without Steve. Or how he doesn't know who he is anymore. Or the supposed choices he has to come home.
But when Steve calls him babe out of habit, he decides to let him. At least for the weekend.
It's a lesson in choices and consequences and finally figuring out what's important.

You just make a different choice and live with those consequences. Each day is a choice. And the consequences, good or bad, of staying here aren't the same as the consequences of coming back. Just like the consequences of leaving aren't the same as the consequences of staying gone.

It’s hard, Steve thinks, trying to parent a 15-year-old mostly by yourself when you’re 35 and a professor on tenure track at a very prestigious university. It’s even harder, he knows, when the mother of said 15-year-old is your closest friend and she lives/teaches at your university’s sister school in London with her girlfriend who’s also a professor.
But the hardest thing? The hardest thing is the fact that people at SHIELD know he’s single. They try to set him up with the worst timing in the world; and he’s looking directly in the direction of some of the other professors at SHIELD who take it upon themselves to ask him out or set him up on days when he has to be at his daughter’s school to watch her steal the school musical’s spotlight for two nights in a row. Maybe he would have said yes once or twice, if it weren’t for the fact that he keeps his private life close to his chest and most non-family people have no clue that he has a daughter.
It’s how he likes to keep his personal and professional life separate, and if that means that people don’t realize he’s bisexual and possibly having not-so-appropriate thoughts about another professor with the most alluring blue-grey eyes he’s ever seen, so be it.
