Summary

Summary
It was just a cruel inevitability. An inescapable fate. Another beat of a butterfly’s wings.
At the look in Hen’s eyes, heartbroken, devastated, Buck’s face crumpled. He quickly schooled his expression. A hard mask. A refusal. A hitch of his breath. “No…”
But the weight of the realisation slowly taking hold pulled down on the corners of his lips, dragged his heart down to his knees, hauled his entire centre of gravity off balance so that his body threatened to topple over.
“He can’t be dead, Hen.” Even saying the word left a rancid aftertaste under his tongue. A sharp, spasmic gasp against the vice-tight pressure in his chest. A stubborn, insistent shake of his head. Buck pulled away from her hold. “No, he can’t– he can’t be gone–”
In which stars collide, the world keeps turning, and we learn that to grieve is to love.

Summary
Bucks hands quivered.
“Buck.”
His lungs sucked in a deep breath, and Buck realised he had been drowning without water until he heard the voice.
“Eddie?”
How many times do you have to platonically run your best friend a bath after near death experiences before you maybe admit that there might be something else going on? (5+1)

Summary
“I am not worried about Chris. I mean, I miss him, but I know he is surrounded by friends.”
“Then…” Buck frowns in confusion. “Are you feeling unwell? Are you hurt?” It’s only been two weeks since the well accident (and the mere thought of it scares Buck even now), so it’s pretty possible that Eddie still suffers from the injuries.
“Buck, has it ever occurred to you that I may be worried about you?”
Buck and Eddie talk. Feelings and confession ensue.

Summary
And for a few weeks he worries about Eddie constantly rubbing and curling his fingers into the center of his chest. That is until Eddie is leaning sideways over a patient and his St. Christopher medal falls out of his shirt. The patient reaches up in a panic and the chain breaks easily. Eddie quickly shoves it in his pocket before trying to calm the patient.
That's when it clicks. Eddie's chain broke in the well and Hayden found it. And Eddie's chest isn't hurting him, he is just constantly making sure his medal is there.

Summary
Eddie propelled himself up the ladder, shutting off those parts of brain he refused to listen to, only focusing on how fast he could climb, how hard he tried pulling on Buck’s safety line, until finally, he gave in to the only logic he was willing to consider.

After the well, Eddie changes his will. He doesn't tell Buck.

Summary
“Yeah, but what is it?” Hen asked, glancing at the tablet.
Bobby is silent and Eddie can take a wild guess that he’s seen the video already. He looks nearly on the verge of tears but he’s clearly trying to hold it together for all of them.
“Cap?” Chimney asked, brows pushed together.
“It’s footage of Buck,” Bobby said slowly. “From the tsunami.”
-----
It's years later when they all finally find out what Buck went through to keep Christopher safe, and none of them were prepared.

Summary
Buck meets his eyes for permission, and with a nod Buck undoes the laces of the sneakers he wore into work. Eddie tries to help, but the squeeze of Buck’s hand around his ankles makes him stop. He lets Buck pull off each shoe, then each sock, setting them on the tile next to them.
There’s a part of Eddie that wants to resist, to make sure Buck knows he can do this himself. That wants Buck to know that he can take care of himself and Christopher despite the shitty day. It’s the part of himself that’s a response to his parents requesting that he let them take Christopher to Texas every other time they talk. It’s the part that’s Pepa’s voice in his head telling him he can’t keep doing this to abuela. But the larger part of himself that’s exhausted and knows that Buck won’t judge him, that knows Buck genuinely wants to help Eddie, pushes the resistance down.
“Come on,” Buck stands up, both hands out in offering to Eddie, “let’s get you in the shower.”

Summary
“Dad said that if anything happens to him, I’ll get to live with you. He wrote it in his wish,” Chris says simply, like he’s making complete, logical sense. “And he signed it and everything.”
“His . . . Wish.” Buck repeats. “That he signed?” He’s racking his brain to think of when Eddie might have brought this up or asked him or even mentioned this, but he’s coming up with absolutely nothing. Not a word has left Eddie’s lips about a will or any future plans, but then it suddenly makes sense how he’d come home from his secret meeting a little more relaxed, and then telling Buck to go have some bonding time with Chris, and –
“Oh my god,” Buck groans, covering his face with his hands. “Your dad wrote me into his will.”
“Will!” Chris shouts, the word finally clicking, but then he quickly pauses. “I like wish better.”
--
Or, the one where Chris spills the beans about the will almost immediately. -

Summary
Buck was usually good at keeping himself busy, distracted—he had enough opened YouTube and Wikipedia tabs to keep him occupied for hours, plus there was the current pile of books he was trying to work his way through. None of these things were keeping his attention today though. His eyes kept falling back to the tv, the weather report still just as chilling as it had been hours ago. A storm was on the rise, one Buck wasn’t at all ready to face.
