    It had become clear that Josuke couldn’t expect Rohan to forgive him with a simple apology, no matter how sincere. What more could he do? Did he even want to make amends with Rohan anymore? Josuke didn’t have to fix his relationship with Rohan. And Rohan certainly didn’t want anything to do with him. What point was there in trying? Josuke thought hard and couldn’t come up with a single reason to befriend Rohan that wasn’t easing his own conscience. There was simply no point in it.

    But Josuke found he couldn’t give up on it anyway.

    Laughing a little at himself, Josuke closed his eyes and tilted his head back to the sky. “Sorry, Rohan. I’m not done defying your expectations yet.”

    (After Kira, Josuke tries to befriend Rohan and falls in love with him instead. Rohan doesn’t know a thing about love, but he’s about to find out.)

    He didn’t have to look at it. It hadn’t fallen out of the wallet for any particular reason. He could put it back without looking. Finish off the drink. Black out some time between nine and two. Probably closer to nine, at this rate. Wake up at five on the dot, as always, work on his dissertation. He could very easily do all that. He had been, the past few months.

    He turned it over and brought it up to the light, and looked. Not that it mattered. It was burned into his memory anyways. Five figures. The dog. The desert behind them.

    He shut his eyes tightly.  Not that it mattered. The faces were seared into his mind. His face. Always. No matter how far he ran. No matter how much he drank. It was all just distractions. At the end of the day, in the somber silence of an empty house, or after a tough battle when everyone else turned to their companions, their loved ones, to embrace them in relief, to gain comfort in their safety, he was alone. And he would turn as well, as if by habit, but would find nothing to embrace but the emptiness beside him.
