    Summary

An almost-abduction should be a traumatic experience. But little Marissa is calm and collected. Only the officer who is supposed to look after her won't be getting much sleep any time soon and when he does, he dreams of young women and old rivers.

“The SAS are reporting a magical crime?”

PC Peter Grant is dragged back out of London into the wilds of the Herefordshire countryside to deal with a report of supernatural vandalism in Stirling Lines, the beating heart of 22 SAS Regiment. But supernatural vandalism is just the symptom, and within the blind patriotism and paranoia of the regimental high command is a much darker sickness, that flooding Wye intents to wash clean.

'Was your father a wizard?' I asked.
'Good Lord no,' said Nightingale. 'It was my Uncle Stanley who carried on the tradition in that generation - it was he who suggested that I attend Cosgrove Hall.'
'He didn't have sons of his own?' I asked.
    'He never married,' said Nightingale.

    Summary

After a burglary at the Hogwarts Railways depot in Southall Harry Potter contacts his cousin with a sales opportunity, they meet and discover that before his death Vernon had made some unexpected connections.

Set pre-COVID. It is a further instalment in the longer thread, The Vernon Chronicles. Lockdown demotivated me for finishing off my earlier works in progress and therefore apologies for the long delay in posting further chapters.

Title changed (4 Apr 2022) as the aftermath chapters have been added.

Now updated to 19 Feb 2024. Chapter 7 added. There is now progress onwards too for Chapters 8 & 9 (10 will possibly be the concluding part) Hopefully, as at least one of the temporary blocks on finding time to write more, has now ceased there will be a shorter lead time before the next updates. Also Feb 2024, a few more characters from both works of canon get mentioned, albeit some rather fleetingly, so the character tags list updated.

“How are you feeling today?” Nightingale asked.

“Fine, sir,” I said promptly, adhering to the principle that when any senior officer asks that question there’s really only one answer they want to hear.

or: Peter struggles to recover from fairyland, and Nightingale keeps a careful eye on him.

Now, my first real effort at fighting off a genii locorum's influence in my head had been Lady Ty, and I'd blown up her fountain. Bev was maybe a friend, and I could do with getting through this with less of a diplomatic incident.

The ball of light turned an ominous shade of dark red, and I jumped slightly as the wave of vestigia hit me: a crowd of fans cheering for their team, a smell of stale sweat and spilled beer and clearest of all, that 1998 football fan song by Fat Les which I'd happily forgotten about until now.

    June 17th, 1989

“This would be a much more straightforward question if you could give me some indication as to what your friend is,” DCI Thomas Nightingale says between sips of tea. Robert Gadling, known to his friends as Hob, world’s only—as far as Nightingale knows—utterly non-magical immortal, gestures vaguely.

After Dream misses their 1989 meeting, Hob files a missing person report with an old friend.
