Hailie is a girl who was taken from her real family as a baby. She was given to a different family, well a mother who wanted to adopt. But she was raised to believe this woman was her mother, when she passed away Hailie tried to bring her back with alchemy. It failed horribly and she lost her arm and both her legs. She was moved to Resembool in an orphanage but met Edward and Alphonse who introduced her to Winry and her grandmother. Hailie eventually got automail and while hanging out with Winry, Ed and Al she grew closer to them. Down the line Hailie left Resembool to find her real family as she wanted to meet them. Until she ran into the two she thought she'd never see before again.

"You al―cough―ways hated these." She mirrored her friend's expression skeptically but allowed him to take it from her.
He shrugged and took a drag before coughing lightly and looking out at the highway. "I always hated a lot of things. I guess almost dying will open you up to one or two of them."
