1878-1880. Holmes's and Watson's first few years in Cramer Street. Includes three of the detective's most important cases: the curious matter of the unpowdered nose which was to have severe longer-term consequences for Holmes, the shocking Tankerville Club affair which brings the prodigious Mr. Benjamin Jackson-Giles into his life, and the repellent philanthropist case which introduced Watson to what would turn out to be a key part of his friend's past. Also featuring Lieutenant Frank Columbo, a tawer, the Musgrave Ritual, a matter concerning thirty thousand dead men, hopelessly corrupt policemen, and two cases which shocked Holmes to the core: the forest fire murder and a hysterical woman whose secret he 'uncovers' then wishes fervently that he had not.
