The Battle of The Binary Stars rewritten to reflect an established relationship.
For one human being to love another human being: that is perhaps the most difficult task that has been given to us, the ultimate, the final problem and proof, the work for which all other work is merely preparation Rainer Maria Rilke, The Selected Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke

Summary
Saru would rarely admit that he had anything in common with Michael Burnham. She seemed to thrive on chaos and risk while he preferred, needed, stability and safety.
But a stressful crew party might prove otherwise. Even if they won't admit it, they can find ways to help each other.

Summary
Michael refused to feel bad about it. Or tried to. Something itched at her every time she looked at Saru. Illogical. Unnecessary. She’d done what was best for them both.
At least he was quiet now. Which meant that soon enough they’d be done with this assignment, and she could report the results to the Captain, and not have to think about it anymore.

Summary
Michael sits bolt upright from where she had been slumped, taking a second to process her surroundings. It is not the dim, fire-lit bridge of a Klingon ship nor the soothing cool lights of her quarters, but rather a blinding white, brightness dialed to one hundred, and the faint shimmer of blue beyond. Her eyes squeeze shut, less about the light than the images painted behind her eyelids. She has no tears left to cry: dried up, dried out, a husk of a Starfleet officer.
“Burnham, I have lost the Captain’s life sign. Burnham?”
Michael grapples with her actions in the Battle at the Binary Stars, but this time, Philippa is alive to discuss them.

Summary
“What’s the crisis?” Detmer asks, as if kidnapping via senior officer is a normal occurrence on their ship—and it assuredly is not, for many reasons, the least of which that Saru would never let Michael hear the end of it if that was the low standard of professionalism by which she managed the crew. “Is it physical, mental, emotional, or—” Detmer waggles her eyebrows. “—personal?”
(In which Michael tries to figure out whether her captain’s invitation to the ball is, in fact, a date.)

Summary
“What did you mean?” she asks. He looks at her. “You said before, it is not always easy.”
“This.” He gestures to the room around them. “Existing among so many people who are so different from you,” he explains. “Who have their own expectations and cultures that seem impossible to grasp.”
“I am human,” she says. She has far less excuse than he to be so troubled by her fellow officers.
He tilts his head. “And I am not. Yet we both find ourselves set apart from our comrades.”
