When Izuku fails to manifest a quirk, his social life takes a nosedive and his father disappears. It's like this for years; seemingly endless bullying and trying not to give his mother even more reasons to worry about him. After his ninth birthday, his father returns, but with ill intent.
Izuku develops a quirk from the stress of his resulting injuries, gains a healthy fear of fire, and loses his mother to them. It's up to an uncle who he didn't know existed and his partner to take up the role of raising him, along with getting him used to his new quirk and lifestyle.

“I. I stayed up.” Izuku murmurs, voice thick and wet. “Last night. I. Wanted to see… If maybe my soulmate would see the- the writing. Um. I guess they did.”
Quirks and Soulmates. Superpowers and a supernatural connection through skin. Izuku has always been fascinated by them, and he dreams of what it would be like to have both. He never gets a quirk, and while he does have a soulmate, the universe seems to want to keep them from him too. Regardless, Izuku forges on, and he eventually finds that the universe has some roundabout ways of doing things.

Avery has known from a young age that he’s a disappointment to his family. And then… That person arrives.
A self-fulfilling introspective look at Avery

There were three things that Izuku knew to be true.
One; in a world where anyone could be born with a supernatural power, not everyone was born equal. From the ability to change the colour of one’s hair to the power to detonate one’s sweat with powerful explosions, the flashier the quirk, the better off in life you would be.
Two; Izuku had no quirk. Among the numerous positions you could have when it came to social standing, he was placed below the bottom, nothing more than the dust beneath everyone’s shoes.
Three; the reason he was standing in front of an orphanage after watching his mother’s form disappear down the street was because of point two.
