He’s content. Really, he is. He wouldn’t still be sloughing through his daily routine if it really made him miserable. The farm is nice. The people in town are nice. His life is nice, he can put a roof over his head and food on his table and always has a good book to read. It’s the peaceful retirement he never thought he would ever deserve, much less attain.
But when he sits in silence for too long, when he crawls into a cold bed, when he wakes up alone…
Caleb can, at the very least, admit that he’s lonely.

“I only buy drinks for my friends.”
Fjord raised an eyebrow at that. He glanced over at Beau but she didn’t appear to be eavesdropping. Nobody was around them. Caleb didn’t appear to have a crew of friends off in a corner who’d dared him to flirt with the scrawny half orc, but something still wasn’t adding up.
“Why me?” he asked. It was an honest question, probably too honest, and the moment he asked it he knew he was killing any chance at this man wanting to keep talking to him. But Caleb didn’t move, didn’t appear to feel insulted as he sipped at his drink.
“You looked like you could use a friend,” he replied, and something inside Fjord ached at that, at how obvious it must be.
“I guess I do.”
Caleb raised his drink towards Fjord. “To friends?”
A moment passed. Fjord’s gaze flicked from Caleb’s slender fingers wrapped around the glass to his piercing blue eyes to the wry smile that turned a corner of his mouth up.
“To friends,” he agreed as he clinked the rim of his glass against Caleb’s.

The floorboards behind him creaked without cause to. A sudden featherlight brush against his shoulder, trailing down his arm made Caleb’s breath seize, his heart suddenly in his throat. He’d only just lifted his hand with a muttered incantation on his lips to summon light when familiar callused fingers, a scarred palm, closed around his wrist, stopping the somatic gesture short.
“None of that now,” a low voice curled in his ear, suddenly close, very close, lips teasing against the back of Caleb’s neck, words whispered against his skin dripping like honey. “No need for that at all,” Fjord purred.

An alternate universe where Zagreus is a classical Greek hero and his divine spouse ends up Thanatos in an arranged marriage situation.

When Thanatos falls in love with the kingdom's trouble-making crown prince, he is not expecting it will amount to anything more than a passing infatuation. He is also not expecting to be made the prince's bodyguard, and he is certainly not expecting the prince will ever love him back.
Thanatos, it transpires, is wrong about many things.
