    Summary

Though Steve had been through the deep dark woods to visit the Scarlet Witch many times, this time he encountered a big bad wolf. A cold wind swept up, and a chill ran down Steve’s back.

Perhaps if our hero were slightly less of an idiot, he would have noted said chill and run away. But that would make our story quite short. There is a reason people smart enough to run away from danger are not the subject of grand stories. (Coincidentally, they do often live longer lives.) Steve, shouldering the burden of narrative conflict, chose not to run away, but instead set his basket of magic apples down and raised his fists.

Or: A fairy tale about a young apple-picker and the mysterious wolf that protects his magic apple tree.

    Summary

“You’re not a very scary monster, are you?” Steve asks that night. He dangles over the edge of his bed again.

The monster under his bed stares at him, his golden eyes luminous.

Then, slowly, he bares his teeth again. They aren’t sharp at all.

“I am Bucky,” he says, trying to snarl.

It’s like another four year old snarling. Steve smiles.

    “I’m Steve,” Steve says.

This is a fairytale. Not the kind you’re used to, with enchanted lights and magical wishes, but the kind that is darker, the grim tale that goes bump in the night.

This is the story of the monster under your bed, and what happens when you fall in love with it.

    Summary

“Seems fucked up,” Natasha snorts. He hears her rustling on the other end and he knows that she, too, is struggling with her guilt. “To be left behind and feel guilty about it.”

Steve laughs lowly, but it’s a sad, desperate, wrinkled thing. He passes a hand over his face.

“What do we do, Nat?” he asks. “Where do we go from here?”

There’s a silence so long he thinks Natasha’s finally fallen asleep. Then, the sound of rustling, again.

“Forward, Steve,” she says, quietly. “We go forward.”

    or;

Steve learns to heal, stays, and goes back for the ones he loves.

“Captain America is haunting me,” Bucky says over a bowl of ramen.

His pronouncement is met with a round of silence.

“Captain America,” Natasha says. “As in--”

“The first Avenger,” Bucky confirms. “Supersoldier and hero of World War II. The fabric of the American conscience.”

“But he’s--dead,” Sam says. His look of perplexed concern, ever perplexed and ever concerned, only increases. “You’re aware of that, right?”

“I know,” Bucky says. “That’s why I said he’s haunting me.”
