Summary
Hakoda looks over at the fire nation military plans scattered across his table, turning to watch the prince of said nation sitting calmly in the chair across from him. He asks the only other question that he needs to know.
"Why?"
Zuko takes in a soft breath as he contemplates his words. In truth, he's been contemplating how to answer this question ever since he decided to turn his back on the only home he's ever known.
"Because my father is-.. a bad person. But I... am not."
It's taken Zuko a long time to be able to say those words and actually believe them.
---------Zuko gets a chance to do things right. He does not intend to waste that chance this time.

Summary
[Time passes oddly. Between one second and the next, Sokka has the Fire Lord pinned to the wall with his hands around the bastard’s throat. Golden eyes (one gold eye, his mind whispers) widen in shock.
“Sokka?” he chokes out. And then he smiles.
What the fuck?
“Sokka, I—”
Sokka slams his head against the wall, once, twice, and the smile wipes off his face. Good.
“What,” Sokka bites out, “have you done to my sister?”]
Or:
An injury leaves Sokka with amnesia. His last memory is of the failed invasion, of leaving his father behind in enemy territory on the Day of Black Sun. Of hopelessness. Rage.
But then he wakes up, and the war is over. Suddenly, he must come to terms with the fact that years have passed, and that he's somehow the Southern Water Tribe Ambassador to the Fire Nation. He is also supposedly friends with banished-Prince-turned-Fire-Lord Zuko, of all people. Close friends.
Yeah, nah.

Summary
“You should be grateful, that we finally found something, that you can contribute to this nation and this family. You will marry Hakoda’s son and bind him to us. Having his son married to Fire Nation Royalty will ail him deeply. And by doing so you will officially resign from the title of the Crown Prince and Azula will be announced my successor.”
Zuko feels numb. He can’t believe this is happening to him. Everything he’s worked for, all the efforts, all the hours he put into becoming a worthy successor, all for nothing. This has nothing to do with kindness. His father found a way of killing two birds with one stone. He’s gaining a leverage over the Water Tribe Chief and the opportunity to install his favorite child as his heir.
Or: As if Zuko's life isn't already difficult enough, his father puts yet another burden on him.

Summary
Things were finally going right. They had a functioning firebender to teach the Avatar within a good amount of time before he was expected to end the war. Hakoda was with them and that in itself felt right. Suki and Jet were settling nicely into the main group. The most exciting new was that Zuko had agreed to maybe be a something with Sokka. Everything was going right... until it wasn't.
Now, the new was about to be tested. Would they all be able to survive against angry sisters, manipulative parties, and internal conflict? Would Sokka and Zuko be able to learn to work together and listen to each other, or will their choices break everything?
