She doesn’t focus on the fact that the first man that she’s ever met that makes her feel fluttering butterflies in her stomach, who is genuinely passionate and interested in what she loves, and is the most stunningly gorgeous man she’s ever seen is someone that is just out of her reach.
This can only last these next few days and then he’ll be gone. She’ll become a distant memory to him, perhaps a muse that he thinks of every few months when he lacks inspiration. She is not his constant.
They are like two parallel lines that meet here, at this point in time in convergence, but will always fade into the distance -- a vanishing point that will eventually fade into the background, an evanescent memory.
She wants more. She doesn’t know how to ask for it so she doesn’t.
Instead she centers herself on the feel of his lips against hers and how it feels when he touches her face so gently, cradling her cheek as he pulls her closer.

Elizabeth,
It’s been months since I’ve last written to you.
I declared my major today and strangely enough, the first person I wanted to tell the news to was you. I am officially an English major with a Creative Writing focus. I’d like to think you would be proud.
It’s getting harder and harder to recall the way you felt against my fingertips and the cadence of your voice. Sometimes I will want to replay it in my head over and over again like a song on loop. But I resist.
Now I think I’ve almost forgotten it almost completely. I don’t know if I’m relieved or terrified. I think, if I’m being honest, it’s a bit of both. I want to forget you but the prospect is terrifying. If I forget you, I think I will forget the part of myself that is solely yours, the part that you have commandeered and stolen from me.
I don’t think I want it back anymore. Let us sever it here.
I am not yours. You are not mine.

Betty tightens her fists, digging her nails into the palms of her hands. The sting is familiar and grounding. It doesn’t lessen the pain she’s feeling. It doesn’t make it go away. It doesn’t make him stop looking at her like she’s the worst type of human being – a heartbreaker, a cheater, a liar.
