Summary
A muffled affirmation comes from the figure lying face down. The figure that is registering rapidly in David’s brain as fucking Patrick Brewer. With a whoosh, David closes the door and steps to the side, leaning up against the wall. He feels faint, his hands are clammy and the smug faces of Blue Jays of the past framed on the wall in front of him are really not helping. What the fuck is he supposed to do now?

Johnny shakes his head and then shakes Patrick’s hand. A strong grip, practiced. Well-versed in the kind of business minutiae that David had never shown even a passing interest in until after Johnny had paid to ensure he never needed to.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Patrick says.
Nice try, buddy, Johnny thinks.
Or, five times Johnny wasn't sure about Patrick and one time he was.

“I can return these tickets to the Julia Stiles-a-thon at the drive in tonight. I agree that might have been a little overboard.”David snatches the tickets out of Patrick’s hand and examines them. They’re dated for that evening. He thinks of sitting around the picnic table on the side of the motel with his family and Stevie in the soft evening light, eating burgers and potato salad and drinking wine. He mentally adds Patrick to the table. It’s almost tempting to just say fuck it and invite Patrick. It certainly would be easier to just give in to his family.
