    Summary

This is what had always been most treacherous about the Forsaken One--people are usually acclimated to its presence, long before they’re sacrificed to it. Loneliness isn’t the experience of finding yourself the only person in an empty room. Most of the time, people feel loneliness like a habit. Sometimes, there’s no reason for it all.

    Summary

It starts like this: Steve, waiting in his car to pick up Dustin and friends from a session of their Chutes and Ladders club or whatever. Waiting kind of impatiently, to be honest, even though it’s not like he has anywhere else to be because Robin’s busy tonight and, as he well knows by this point, saving the world doesn’t get you a girlfriend or glory or even a second age-appropriate friend, it just gets you another evening shift at Family Video and a long personal to-do list.

In the spring and summer of 1986, Steve Harrington contends with the biases of the day, hatches several plans, and finally really gets to know Eddie Munson.

Featuring some of my favorite Steve Robin dialogue.

“Robin’s coming, too,” Steve wheedles. “Robin loves—” He breaks off; he was about to say brown-haired women who could kick her ass , but obviously that is a no-go until the phase of the plan where Robin and Eddie come out to each other, so instead he finishes weakly with “—uh, sequels.”

Robin stares at Steve. Steve stares back at her.

    Summary

“Yeah, great job, Henderson,” Steve says. “Risk your life for the ticking time bomb. I don’t foresee a way this can go wrong at all.”

“Uh, no man left behind,” Dustin argues, which would be kinda sweet, except, “even the ones with a hundred murder charges.”

“Thanks, dude,” Eddie says to him, anyway. In his peripheral, Steve rolls his eyes.

or, Eddie escapes the Upside Down. Problem is, he’s still wanted for—well. Pretty much everything. So he hides out in Steve's basement.

    Summary

In 1983, Nancy tells Steve to run. He does. In 1986, he follows Jason Carver, but when he finds Eddie in the boathouse and he tells him of something impossible, Steve believes him.

Steve squints at him. He’s a drunk who forgets the name of the girl of the day. “What’re you going to do? Hand him in to the cops?”

Jason narrows his eyes. “I’m going to make him pay. He’s killed another. On the news, did you see? I need to stop him before —”

“— Jason,” he cuts him off, “man, this is…”

Bitterly, Steve thinks he’s beautiful, rotten and beautiful and Steve’s perfect mirror if maybe he were braver. He would have revenge against his mother; against the monster; against his father. Revenge against the line where parent and monster blurs, where wombs and umbilical cords knot into this unnameable terror. If only Steve were braver. “Harrington,” says Jason, “it’s Chrissy.” And he says it like Steve might once have said Nancy and it stings like something old and foreign and he chases that escape from the numbness, something that isn’t numb but sharp and painful. “It’s Chrissy.”

ST but much darker. I love how this author kept Steve and Robin's relationship but changed it to suit this darker universe.
