“Every battle has a cost,” he said finally, his eyes darting back to her. “Don’t allow it to be you. If you worry too much, you won’t see the enemy coming.”
Her cheeks warmed but before she could say anything, he continued, “Stick close to me, we can protect each other.”

well, not really but better safe than sorry.
Peter didn't know what would happen when he put on the gauntlet--staring the Mad Titan down.
certainly not this.
or: Peter was the one that used the Gauntlet and the effects were world changing. Now, Peter is a immortal, the Guardian of the Stones--keeping them safe through the passage of time, starting from the beginning.
He was there when the planets started to form, and watched as civilizations grew. He got use to his new task, keeping a eye on the stones as they influenced the world around them. He had part of the stones with him, this was true--and he had long since master the use of them.
However, the stones still needed to be out in the cosmos so he was more connected to the spirit of them, and it marked him. Now, he knew when the a wielder of a Stone threatened to unbalance everything and would take it away.
He lived like this for millennia, unchanged--until the year of 2010 on planet Earth.
For a long time, Tim was markless, his skin free of any design or name that would show that someone, someday would love him. He gave up on finding anyone who would before he turned thirteen.
Now, in his late teens, he had a name that people recognised, even revered. He had a mom in the form of his mentor.
He had a mark.
Bucky never went looking for his family, afraid of what he'd find or what they'd think of him. He thought if they were out there, they would be better off without him. It wasn't until a little boy who shared his name ducked into the coffee shop to hide from a fight that his feelings changed.
"War is never justified, Prince Zuko. I hope, one day, that you'll see that." Uncle told him.
But Father was the Fire Lord, and it was treasonous to oppose the chosen of Agni. So, Father was right. The war was right.
It had to be.
(“You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher,” Father had said; but he’s always learned everything on his own.)
Or: Zuko fights both his loyalty and his upbringing, and slowly realises his People are more important than his Honor.
(I am currently re-writing the chapters that are already up because they could really use a glow-up. I'll be posting them all at once with the sixth chapter- so when the update comes, you know what's up!)

“While it is always best to believe in oneself, a little help from others can be a great blessing."
Sometimes we find help from those we least expect. Like Zuko rescuing the Avatar from Zhao and, in turn, be rescued right back.
The simple act sparks a cascade of events that cause the banished prince to doubt his resolve.
Crossroads of Destiny AU.
Zuko makes a different choice in the caverns beneath Ba Sing Se. He just doesn't know what exactly it was that he's chosen or what it means for him. It evens out, because the Gaang also doesn't know what exactly it is that Zuko's chosen or what it means for them. Trusting maybe-former enemies is difficult. Finding Aang a firebending teacher and stopping the Fire Nation is necessary.
Sozin's Comet won't wait for them to figure it out.
A Spirit lost. A child saved.
The Balance tilts.
The World shifts.
The Veil cracks.
