In this AU, The events are the same except that Mulder doesn't find anything in the evidence room below the Pentagon. CSM doesn't give him any cure either but tries to convince him to work for him anyway.
This takes place just after Mulder cried at Scully's bedside. He doesn't want to leave so he stays in the room with her. At some point she wakes up and sees him there.

If someone wrote "Time Travel for Dummies," the guidebook should include a chapter titled “Love as a Form of Self-flagellation.” Or “She’s Your Touchstone, You’re a Stranger.” Mulder’s ancient files documented time travel, parallel universes, multiverses, and wormholes. Back in the day, he’d been a regular G-man with a hot partner, a hazy job description, and a plan to thwart an alien invasion. Then the world ended. Scully vanished. And none of his X-files offered any guidance on romance in a time of pleated pants and shoulder pads.

Mulder is a man who's seen war. Scully is a woman who's used her body to survive, a war of its own kind. Now a singer at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin, she spends her days dealing in secrets and nights singing love songs she doesn't believe in.

Summary
They are the boogiemen of the world of UFO researchers, two figures clad in black that manage to hunt down every last witness to close encounters. They are at the scene of every sighting in record time, collecting each bit of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem. By the time they are gone, there is no physical evidence to prove that they ever visited and no human will attest to their presence.

Sometimes it needs guidance from someone who understands grief and pain. Someone who will not give up or back down. Someone who will see a broken heart and not declare it unfixable, but grab the tape, glue, or whatever it takes, to fix it and make it whole again.
