The smell of the coffee hits Buck’s nose and he’s all of a sudden overcome with emotion, so powerful he feels like he can’t breathe, and he’s drowning, searching desperately for the words to express what’s suddenly choking him. And with the scent of Eddie still on his blankets, the pillow that Eddie had thrown at his face now laying on his chest where it had fallen, the coffee that Eddie had made for him without a second thought steaming a foot away from him, everything around him Eddie’s but still this strange overwhelming sense of belonging, unlike anything he’s ever felt before, and then it hits him.

What was that about? Eddie is his best friend, his straight best friend, his straight best friend who he definitely does not have feelings for. And look, sure, Buck is pretty chill about his sexuality, he’s hooked up with a couple of guys before, and he’s not blind, he knows Eddie is attractive. Like, really attractive.
But that doesn’t mean anything, all it means is that he hasn’t had sex in several months and happens to have a very attractive best friend who he spends a lot of time with. That’s all it is. Just a fluke, an accidental dream born out of loneliness and proximity to hot people. Well. Hot person.

He managed to choke out a “goodnight buddy” before standing up, planning to go home and have an emotional freakout, only to see Eddie standing in the doorway, looking at Buck with an unreadable expression.

Nothing good comes from someone pounding on the door at two in the morning.
He pulls the door open mid knock, ready to lay into whomever the hell has decided that the middle of the night is a reasonable time for a visit, but the words turn to ash on his tongue when he finds Eddie standing there, his fist still raised to pound on the door as Buck swings it open.
And Eddie looks like shit.
It's not even the bruises blooming up his arms and spreading over his cheekbone. It's not the split and swollen knuckles that are so prominently on display with how his fist is still floating in midair between them.
It's the nearly wild look that's burning in his eyes — pain and sorrow and grief that's smoldering just beneath the surface, threatening to explode, to consume him completely.
