Byleth, the Ashen Demon. She wasn’t one to hide her emotions beneath a mask, not like he was. Rather there seemed little behind her unreadable gaze at all. She was cold and hard like… a weapon. While Dimitri found it difficult to admire someone like that, he could see the value of receiving her guidance. With her direction, then what he hoped to achieve would become a reality. And that cold hardness… well, perhaps he could stand to learn a little of that from her, too.
Dimitri is drawn to Byleth from the moment they meet. Except... he’s not her student, he’s not anyone of importance to her at all. How can he hope to hold onto something that was never his to begin with?

The Fell Star shone upon him. The Boar fled and hid in the umbral depths, afraid of what such light would reveal.
A Goddess made flesh extended Her hand, but the Boar found that the blood on his palms was slippery.
When She spoke, he could only hear the screams of his past.
Yet still, terrified and tortured, he sought Her relentlessly.
On a surface level, Dimitri supposed that he and Byleth were comically opposed—though, their core darkness had fostered kinship. He’d felt it since they chanced upon the mercenaries, with her strange poise and the unnatural calm that didn’t quite reach her eyes. He’d glimpsed the woman beneath only a few times since.
She seemed to like him, forming an easy friendship where much remained unspoken, yet understood. It was validating, in a way—to be seen without the process of baring one's self. It made him curious about her darkness. Was it like his own?
She was his supporter. Neither a vassal, nor a subject. He saw an ally on his path for vengeance—though, as things go, it was not in the way he had imagined.

“You can break, or throw yourself away,” Byleth said, her voice thick with emotion. “And if you need to, you can break me too. But please,” she held Dimitri’s face between her hands, hot against cold, “please just take me with you when you go.”
She leaned back to search his bright blue eye, a small smile nestling itself in the corners of her mouth. “Or let me follow. Either works.”
A heartrending sob tore from him, and he wilted over her shoulder, holding her to him like she was the only thing tethering him to the earth. She gathered him to her as best she could, arms wrapped tightly around the broken prince, fingers tangled in the fur of his great cloak. And she would hold him unto the ends of the earth, if he asked.

What if Byleth didn't sleep through those five crucial years, but lost her memory instead?
