Hanahaki was a disease in which when a cultivator had unrequited feelings for a person their favorite flower would start growing in their lungs. If a person has a high cultivation level then the roots are burned out for years before they died. After the roots grow and the afflicted coughs up flowers they will die. The only escape is if their love is killed.
