i. Yuki, in general, didn’t cross his mind very often. He may as well have been another one of the ornaments lining the inner estate’s halls.
ii. Blood had never really bothered him. But as it poured from Hatori’s eye, seeped through his fingers and hit the floor in thick drops, he felt something in him churn.
iii. Rin remained stony in the following quiet. The look aged her some years, he thought, or if not that, looked misplaced on her. A child wearing the airs of an adult, caught up in problems within and beyond her.
iv. The name escaped him here, but that woman held God in her belly.
v. The goldfinch stopped perusing the ground and, after some pause, fluttered and hopped to reach her finger. As it perched itself there, she sat back up slowly, careful not to jostle it. It was, Shigure thought, one of those rare moments.
Five scenes from Shigure's life, from his perspective.

Yuki rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. His brows pinched in something like frustration, or maybe pain, and he let out a small groan.
“Don’t be mean.” Kakeru rested his arms on the edge of the desk and bent forward to set his chin on his forearm. From there, he could look up at Yuki, who kept his head low. “It didn’t matter today, though, I guess. Came here for a nap and I couldn’t sleep! I was just bored. But then I was thinking, ‘Hey, what if I just wandered around until I ran into Yun so I won’t be bored anymore,’ and then I thought, ‘What if I just waited for him outside of his class?’ Which would have been funny, because it would have made your weird fangirls mad.”
Yuki lowered his hand from his eyes at that, and he stared at him.
“Why would that make them mad?”
Kakeru paused. At first, he waited for his friend to catch on by himself, waited to see that classic look of annoyance dawn on him, but as that questioning look refused to leave his expression, Kakeru felt something weird flip his gut around.
Kakeru, for once, isn't very tired. Yuki is strangely exhausted. Kakeru tries to help, and is faced with some wayward feelings.

Yuki tugged on Kakeru’s hand firmly, either to scold him for laughing or to accentuate his point. “You’re just avoiding me!”
“I am not.” Kakeru pressed the back of his free hand against his mouth, sputtering the last of his laughter into it, before saying, “It just doesn’t matter. Swear.”
“What? Why not?”
“Well,” Kakeru said, and he was acutely aware of how Yuki continued to hold his hand, fingers curled loose into his palm. Gently, he pulled back. “It’s not like they like me back.”
Yuki placed his hand back beside him on the floor. He looked down at it, splaying his fingers wide and shut again, before asking, “...You still like them, then?”
Kakeru wiped his hand on his jeans as it grew clammy.
Yuki murmured something under his breath. It sounded close to a curse, but Kakeru wasn’t sure.
Kakeru was readying himself for him to say something that would give him chest pains, something like 'that’s really sad' or 'that sounds lonely,' but instead, when Yuki next spoke, his words were so quiet Kakeru wasn’t sure he had heard him right.
Yuki gets trapped in a closet (again). Kakeru is trapped with him.

“What?” Yuki asks.
“What do you mean what, Prince?” Uotani scoffs.
“Why are you all looking at me like that?”
“Because you two are, like, all over each other,” she says, incredulous.
“More like he’s all over me.”
