Summary
Sara knows this is it. She's on the verge of dying already, so at least it won't take long for them to actually manage to kill her. The AVA walks into the recess. It's so small and Sara's barely even hidden, she's pretty sure the clone would have seen her even if a torchlight hadn't stopped on her frame for at least five seconds before dropping away from her. She waits for the gun to be raised, for her to call for help, for the inevitable fall. None of it comes.

“I’m leaving as well, to help take care of my mother since we’ll probably need to let go of her nurses… but I can reach out to the faculty, we’ll find some place for you if it’s needed. There will be several students in a similar position, I presume, and all of the international students as well, maybe the administration can reconsider letting the dorms open or-”
“Thanks, Professor Gideon, but that isn’t necessary. I’ll figure something out, there’s no need to involve the faculty.”
“Ms. Sharpe, it’s not a-“
“I mean it, Professor. I’ll be fine.”
Her resigned tone was so different from her usually challenging, infuriating one that it made Sara’s stomach drop. A vague idea started to form in her brain, so ludicrous that she tried to push it down before it took form. She couldn’t possibly… there was just no way, it was the worst-
“You can stay with me,” she blurted out, shocking all three of them. It seemed to work as a defibrillator on Ava, because suddenly all the fire was back to her eyes.
“Are you insane?”

Summary
This story, is a love story. Kind of. It's just not an "in love" story.
Well, at least not right away.Or, Ava reconnects with Sara, a childhood friend she hasn't seen in years, and finds out Sara's dropped out of college and has a child: Jason. They don't get along very well at first, but Jason and Ava adore each other, so Sara endures her presence. Only for Jason's sake, of course.

"After the door of Sara’s bunk closed behind them, Ava took two big strides to close the distance between them. Without another word, she reached out a hand to cup Sara’s cheek and pressed their lips together softly, in stark contrast to their first kiss earlier that night. Sara wrapped her arms around Ava's waist as she melted into her."
