“Okay. What’s your name?”
Lena’s response is knee-jerk. “None of your damn business.”
Supergirl runs her fingers through her hair again, and this time it comes out a little worse for wear – it sticks up wildly near her temple, and Lena can see a slight cowlick. It’s strangely humanizing.
“Look, my boss isn’t going to like that I’m working with an unknown as it is. If we’re going to work together, I at least need something to call you.”
When Lena shakes Supergirl’s hand, she feels the warmth of victory when the hero seems shocked at the firmness of her grip. But alarmingly an even stronger warmth radiates from their joined palms, spreading up her arm, and Lena pulls her hand back faster than what’s generally considered polite, curling it into a fist.
“You can call me Kieran.”

“Help me understand,” Kara says. “Are you saying everyone falls in love with their best friend?”
“I’m saying that queer women have a special affinity for it,” Lena repeats, fishing the cherry out of the bottom of her drink. “The whole ‘falling for your straight best friend’ is basically a rite of passage.”
“Says who?”
“Everyone.” She puts the cherry in her mouth, bites it off the stem. “The L Word was like, built on the premise that a friend group of queer woman in LA dated each other in some sort of terrible repeating circle for, god, however many seasons that went on. And it’s been my experience that when two people are attracted to each other, and they’re close, feelings are likely to develop.”
“That’s just, I mean, come on.” Kara’s cheeks are a little pink. “A trope and a tv show? That’s your evidence?”
“So you’ve never been in love with your best friend?” Lena looks down at her empty glass.
“No!” Kara sounds affronted. “No, I have never been in love with my best friend.”

Summary
Lena is waiting for her at the balcony when she lands with a delicate thud, looking so soft and so comfortable in a large-sized grey sweater. She is leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed over her chest, a thoughtful expression on her face. “Hi,” she greets in a low voice, green eyes looking a bit tired as meeting blue ones. “Game night got canceled?”
“No, not exactly,” Kara answers, pushing her hands inside her pockets, unable to help herself from watching her friend carefully. It seems like she has just gotten home from work, freshly out of a shower, her dark long hair still a bit wet. “But it’s bad luck to have an odd number for game night.”
Opening a small smile, Lena tightens her arms around her chest, seeming a bit cold in the open air. Her slight discomfort makes the blonde watch her more carefully, noticing the grey sweater going at her midthighs, her bare legs shining in the moonlight. It’s a tiny bit distracting, especially because Kara isn’t sure if she is wearing anything underneath.
But it’s not her clothes that make Kara’s heart twist in her chest. It’s the fact that her guard is up like never before. Like Lena is trying to hide something from her.
