This is...so good? I earnestly hope they carry on with it someday. It adds another whole layer of awesomeness to the already in-a-class-by-itself Sansukh story.

And instead, all he got was a note. Delivered in the usual way, written in the usual code – a brief comment about the weather, encoding an address that turned out to be a cab depot. And at the end, the words “Business as usual?” in plain text.

No apologies, no explanations, just a request. Balmoral wanted to laugh at the nerve of it. He wanted to cry in relief. He’s still got the note now, tucked into his chest pocket – a grievous breach of protocol to have kept it, but after everything that happened, Balmoral is feeling rather rebellious.

James Hathaway often thought that at his christening he must have been cursed, by an underhanded and satirical fairy, with the twin blessings of an excellent memory and an inability to run away from his past.

Written for Lysimache in the 2012 Lewis Secret Santa at the lewis_challenge LJ comm. Rated for some long-awaited sex and a few bad words, overwhelmed by ridiculous amounts of literary allusion and exploratory metaphor.
