    Summary

Dr. Harry D. S. Goodsir makes a sacrifice, of himself, for Silna. Or: The author bought into the abject horror of the sex-pollen trope with far too much sincerity. It got out of hand.

It's visible to him. A whitish grub of some sort, as carnivorous and flexible in appearance as a leech though minus the suckers and clearly not an annelid, and cloaked in a tiny personal pyre of cobalt-blue fire to which it seems impervious, and which apparently burns with neither fuel, nor smoke, nor even noise. It twists in place, writhing a sidewinder path across the floor. The lotus of blue flame crawls along with it, and wherever the fire touches the floorboards, Goodsir can just see them; he can see the floorboards within the flames, as normal brown floorboards, grooved and worn and earthly. The fire leaves no singes upon the wood, and whatever light it casts does not extend at all to the black plenum beyond itself.
