Summary
Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng catch Nie Mingjue in his secret meeting with someone. Misunderstanding ensues, and Jiang Cheng has a lot of complicated feelings over some matters.Now that they could properly look at the pair’s backs, Wei Wuxian realized that it was a man, slight and shorter than Nie Mingjue. At a glance, he thought it was the Sect Leader Nie’s Deputy, Meng Yao, who was present during the orientation as part of the Nie Sect retinue, but oh… definitely not him.
Not when he familiarly hooked his arm with Nie Mingjue’s and stuck impossibly close to his side.
While apparently surprised at the sudden gesture, Nie Mingjue did not pull away, and if anything, he relaxed at the touch, a fond look cutting through his default serious expression that was missed by his companion.
Wei Wuxian found it simply endearing.

“It’ll be all right,” Nie Mingjue murmured to Nie Huaisang, who was curled in his arms, shaking and terrified. "It’ll be all right. We’ll manage, somehow.”
He didn’t believe a word he said, of course. How could everything be all right?
Their father was dead. Murdered – Wen Ruohan had put him down like a rabid dog, wringing his neck and tossing him aside. He’d then announced that Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang, now orphans, would be brought back to the Nightless City and taken into the Wen sect to be his wards, to be appropriately reeducated and brought up well. Brought up properly.
Nie Mingjue didn’t know what to expect when they arrived. He didn’t think it would be anything good.

Nie Huaisang didn't want to attend the conference in the first place, and now Wen Xu, of all people, won't leave him alone.“You are persistent,” Nie Huaisang sighed, and Wen Xu chuckled under his breath as he joined him on his walk. “Hasn’t anyone ever told you its polite to mask your scent?” Nie Huaisang waved his fan at Wen Xu pointedly.
Wen Xu shrugged. “I don’t care,” he said honestly. A sharp smile crossed his lips as he leaned closer to Nie Huaisang, eyes gleaming. “Have you thought about my offer?”
Nie Huaisang rolled his eyes but didn’t step away. He snapped his fan open and brought it up to cover his face, peering at Wen Xu over the top of it. “About your oh so casual offer of patricide?” he asked softly, then shook his head. “Of course not.”
