Tom thought nothing could be worse than the alien Armageddon, but when he’s left devastated by a personal tragedy, he realizes how wrong he was. Adrift, depressed and in danger of alienating his children, Tom is coming apart at the seams. A chance encounter with Pope shows Tom that he is the one person who seems to truly understand what he’s going through. In a world that seems like it’s always one second from dying, Tom's relationship with Pope becomes something more than he would have ever thought. Despite himself, Tom starts to want to live again. Summary
Steve isn’t ashamed of his imaginary friend when he’s five, because he imagines that everybody has one. But when he’s six, and when he’s eight, and when he’s nine, he talks to Loki less and less, because it’s strange, it isn’t done, it isn’t right, and Loki, with his clever eyes and all that bitter light around his smile, accepts it.

Actually a plausible AU that didn't give me a toothache due to fluff. This is sad and that's a good thing because so little fic is these days. There is, however, "keening" but it's excusable since it's only one instance. Everything else, all 99.999% of it is good... something else that's rare with fic these days. I am pleased to have found something to read at long last.

Bookmarker's Notes
This is a brilliantly realized piece of writing and I think everyone should read it. It isn’t cheap sentiment and schmoop; it is gorgeously, grotesquely and unsettlingly realistic. The dialog is sharp, the characterizations are spot-on and the imagery is sheer perfection. Despite its darkness, it is still an honest-to-fuck love story of the highest caliber. Nightmare Angel is the kind of story that will stick with you for a long time and that is the best kind of story.

It feels so obvious. It’s not in the wrinkles of his clothes or the colour of his teeth or even hiding in his nail beds, but it might as well be.

Bookmarker's Notes
This is a “kill your soul in a good way” kind of fic. This has two of my favorite things: Beautifully heartbreaking prose and soul-rupturing sentence structure—meaning it has real impact. It's perfect and there should be more fics like this out there—attention to detail, characterization and emotion that isn't forced or saccharine. It’s gorgeous and it's real. This story lets you (the reader) know what it’s like to truly hurt in a way almost ALL stories fail to do. Yeah. Read it.
