    Summary

Izuku doesn't have a quirk. That's the long and short of it. After being told his whole life he can't be a hero, General Education at UA is the best he can hope for, right? Wrong. Dead Wrong. So super wrong that his best friend from Gen Ed, all of Class 1A and a whole mess of Pro Heroes are going to prove to him how wrong he is. Izuku has the makings of a hero, and his lack of a quirk only throws those qualities into starker relief. After all, who wants to be as strong as All Might when you can be the cleverest hero in the business?

    Summary

All his life, nobody truly believed in Midoriya Izuku's dream of being a Hero. Not his mother, his childhood friend, his classmates or teachers...not even the Number One Hero believes in him. What is a Quirkless boy to do?

Show the world it's wrong, that's what. Finally, after years of no one believing him, there was one man who did. After All Might left Izuku on a roof with the answer of 'no', one man who was not a Hero finally told the boy, "I believe you can become a Hero." Izuku wants to prove the man right.

Short version: One person, who is NOT a Hero, finally tells him yes, and Izuku decides to become a Hero through the Support Course, making friends along the way.

Honestly, I have read a large percentage of quirkless!Izuku fics where he goes into the Support or Gen Ed departments as a stepping stone to becoming a hero anyway in comparison to any other kind of BNHA fics. Or just generally “Izuku takes a different path” due to remaining quirkless, having a different quirk, or what have you, especially where his analytical skill remains at the forefront. I’m tired of shounen protags who are dumb everywhere except for fighting and/or are really good at the one skill their franchise is all about (like cooking in Shoukugeki no Souma), and Izuku is clearly willing and able to use his brain. This fic is but one of the quirkless!supportdept!Izuku fics I’m subscribed to, but I figured if I keep going back to reread it all the time like I have been, I should probably bookmark it instead.

And although I like the idea of One for All and its status as a main character identifier and power-up, Izuku becoming the next holder was a one in a gajillion chance. And it’s proof of how fucked up quirk society is in BNHA. Wham, no you can’t be a hero cause you don’t have a superpower like everybody else, so all your prior efforts are absolutely worthless. Bam, wait actually you totally saved someone (your bully, in fact) while powerless because everyone else who had abilities were too fucking dumb to consider doing anything without their quirks. Wham, I just happen to be able to pass my quirk on and I also happen to be looking for a successor, you need my quirk so you can become a hero. Like that’s just super fucked up.

I tend to like characters who use their wits to succeed more than I like the character who just punches things til they win, tho of course I like the characters who use their wits to figure out a strategy/weak point and then punch the bad guy til they win. It also probably has to do with the medium of entertainment; it’s a lot of fun to read abt/watch characters being smart in any medium, but visual mediums convey the epicness of a battle where ppl just hit each other with attacks a lot more easily than like just words on a page w/out pics can. I mean, hey, I love One Piece and Jojo and Naruto, I’m not gonna knock on how awesome fights between powerful characters can be. I just like them even better when there’s strategy too.

EDIT: I just realized why I like quirkless!Izuku fics so much; there’s this kids book trilogy called “Ordinary Boy” or “The Adventures of Ordinary Boy” or something like that which I read cause my brother owned them, and it was a story about a hero-villain society where everybody had their own unique superpowers, except for the main character, who still wanted to be a superhero (thus, Ordinary Boy), and he used his brains to save the day. If I remember correctly, he thought that his parents’ powers (which were maybe fire and ice? or water?) canceled out. (SPOILER) He ended up figuring out that the main villain, a mad scientist, had somehow chemically altered the potatoes that were made into the potato chips that absolutely everybody ate, which then gave everyone superpowers. I think Ordinary Boy just had a mutation which didn’t allow him to absorb the chemical, thus he had no powers even tho he ate the chips too. Random mutations crop up in living organisms all the time too, and if the mutant is able to survive and reproduce, they can pass it on. The mutation had to have been beneficial or at least not harmful for the mutant to be able to live long enough to do so. It’s very basic evolutionary theory.

tldr; basically I really loved Ordinary Boy and thought it was a clever critique of superhero media and, in general, talking about basic prejudice and maybe overcoming imposter syndrome, all wrapped in a cute and engaging kid’s story. So I’m disappointed that BNHA glosses over quirk discrimination, and thus I like fics that actually talk about it. Because if tomorrow ppl were to wake up with superpowers, you can sure as hell bet that ppl would categorize each other into groups for something they couldn’t help being, and then start being discriminatory and prejudiced against certain groups judged to be lesser, just like already happens with race, gender, sexuality, etc.

Shinsou Hitoshi had a bit of a problem, and that problem was that he’d gotten attached to Aizawa Shouta. And somewhere along the line had started seeing him as a parental figure, a replacement for all the foster home parents who’d passed him along and never quite done their job.

A kid who's been in foster care his entire life spends a normal, average day after training with the teacher who seems to care a little too much.

Every single school had one: someone at the top of the food chain. An acme, one might say. Someone who could do things under a teacher's nose, escape consequences, claim territory and terrify other people. Someone who looked down on everyone else like they were prey. An apex predator. And Izuku couldn't count on teachers and adults to protect anyone. Even a hero school wasn't safe from the phenomena.

When Izuku gets to Yuuei, he's determined to find out who it is and ensure they can't hurt him or his new friends.

...and accidentally, in the process, becomes the apex predator (though he is mostly unaware of this, and uses it for good. But still, people are terrified of him.)

    Apex Predator by silverjackdaw

This fic, in short, can be described as my absolute fave BNHA fic ever and everyone should read it!! The fluff, the angst of children recovering from abuse with the help of actual good adults and caretakers, the humor, the timing, the storytelling that twists canon events so very well, it’s all amazing. The tags don’t mention it, but it’s also subtly EraserMic, and probably TodoDeku in the future.
