“Are you a cultivator?”
“No,” she says, steadily. “This one doesn’t possess the core for it.” She pauses and raises her eyes to his, so boldly he finds it a little startling. “I believe that I can be of use to the Jiang sect in spite of that, and I have brought a gift to prove it. May I show you?”
Fully intrigued now, Jiang Cheng nods. The girl unslings the bundle from her back, unties a couple of straps, and unrolls it on the floor in a smooth motion.
Jiang Cheng is on his feet before he even consciously realizes it’s happened, and the reaction murmurs out through the hall. There, on a blanket that belongs on the back of a horse, are five Wen cultivator swords, offered to him by a girl who looks like the word “bumpkin” was invented specifically for her. What the fuck.
“Where did you get those?” he asks, instead of asking “What the fuck?” out loud, because that would be unbecoming of his status as sect leader.
The girl meets his eyes again, lifts her chin, and says simply, “I killed the men who carried them.”
Or: Fan Dingxiang cultivates the swole path. Jiang Cheng doesn't know how to handle that.

“Oh, and that time I ran away? From the family that had me before the Jiangs took me in? I got hypothermia.” Wei Ying says all of this with the same easy demeanor that he uses when he tells playground stories about Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, like he’s not discussing trauma. “When you get hypothermia once you’re more susceptible to it in the future, which is a fun side effect.” He shrugs and kisses Lan Zhan’s neck with lips that are still cold but not horribly so. “I just get cold easy now. I’m used to it.”
“Mn,” Lan Zhan says, and means, “We’ll fucking see about that.”
Or: Wei Ying is not allowed to be cold, therefore Lan Zhan must learn to knit.

Summary
Anyway, the point is, Wei Wuxian knows rain. It’s a natural, normal weather phenomenon. Normally he only pays it as much mind as he needs to--like, maybe he remembers to grab a hat if it looks stormy. (It’s more likely that he’ll forget the hat and then have to crowd under Lan Zhan’s umbrella, which neither of them is complaining about, mind you.) It’s just. You know. Rain. Sure, he and Lan Zhan may have had several dramatic, fraught, emotional confrontations with each other in the middle of horrible rainstorms, but that’s just coincidence! Sometimes it rains! Nothing to worry about!
It’s just that maybe they’re primed to expect a certain outcome from past experience, which might explain why, when lightning flashes and thunder cracks and the sky opens up over them a little ways outside the nearest village, he and Lan Zhan whip around to face each other in a sudden panic.

Summary
Lan Wangji does not mean to return to Yiling.
Nothing grows on the Burial Mounds. In the natural world, grave sites are fertile ground for new growth, the decay of human bodies providing rich food for both animal and plant life, but the resentful energy of the murdered piled in their mass graves leeches life out of anything that tries to take root here.
But here is a tree, alive amongst all the husks, small and with sprouting leaves. It's not even the right season for sprouting leaves.

But Lan Zhan is unrelenting. He smiles at Wei Ying, soft and fond, and rubs little soothing circles against Wei Ying’s back with his thumb. “You’re not what, Wei Ying?”
Wei Ying whines, soft and sweet, and drops his gaze, unwilling to entertain this further. But Lan Zhan kisses his neck again, and strokes at his hair, still twisted up against the back of Wei Ying’s head, held in place by his fist.
“You’re not my omega?” he whispers, tightening his grasp on Wei Ying’s hair, directing Wei Ying to look up and meet his gaze in the mirror. “But you submit to me like you’re my omega.”
Oh.
Wei Ying’s eyes widen in shock. He can feel his heart beating in his chest, frantic and rabbit-quick.
“You get wet for me like you’re my omega.” Lan Zhan whispers, and trails his fingers along Wei Ying’s waist, stirring up a dizzying warmth between his legs.

“Yes?” he says with his widest, most innocent eyes.
“Senior Wei!” demands Lan Jingyi, shoving himself to the front of the group. “Why didn’t you tell us you’re a contestant on this year’s season of The Great Gusu Bake Off?!?”
