    Summary

David says, "It's not too late to stay at the motel," after a beat, his lithe fingertips brushing gently along Patrick's arm; he watches as they sweep back and forth from his wrist to his elbow. David is using that sweet, sincere voice of his, too, taking Patrick back to that afternoon before his first surprise party: David on the couch beside him as he softly said, "I can just be your business partner tonight."

Patrick shakes his head now, just like he had back then. "No. No, I want to go," he says, the steady rhythm of David's touch solidifying his decision even further. "You're my husband, David. I want to bring you home." His teeth pull his bottom lip into his mouth. "I don't even know why I'm still nervous."

    Except… He does. Sort of.

Or: Patrick brings David home while the house is undergoing renovations. He has a lot of feelings about it.

    Summary

He shrugs halfheartedly. “I’m not…I’m not good, Patrick. Not like you.”

David wants to curl into a ball and shrivel up right here on the side of the road instead of looking at what his husband’s face is doing. It’ll be enough to kill him.

And sure enough, it nearly is.

“David,” Patrick starts, eyes brimming and then, in a voice he only uses in their most vulnerable moments, a broken, “Baby.”

    --

A backhanded compliment from Alexis throws David for a loop, and now all he can think about is how he'll wind up with a failed marriage and breaking his husband's perfect heart.

    Summary

Patrick smiles indulgently. “So you and Alexis didn’t pretend to be lawyers so you could finagle your way into a meeting with Wendy and the Australian Blouse Barn people?”

“Um, technically, only Alexis pretended to be a lawyer. I just...didn't correct the Blouse Barn lady when she made the same assumption about me.”

Patrick nods and his eyes are so fond. “Why didn’t you tell me?"

David shrugs. “I told you Wendy gave me the money I used to start the store.”

“Yeah,” Patrick agrees. “But you made it sound like it was some kind of severance package or something. You didn’t tell me that you got her the money, and then she passed a fair chunk of it over to you.”

Or: Patrick learns how David really got the money and has feelings about it. Filth & Feelings and a gross misuse of office space ensue.

    Summary

Simon sighs, his mind racing at the thought of coming out. If Abby and Leah making such a big deal about a ‘girl’ they haven’t met, Simon figures they’ll make a big deal when a boy turns up at the airport. He doesn’t want it to be a big deal. He can see their faces now—wide eyes and dropped jaws and confused looks. He can see the (admittedly unlikely) disappointment and judgment, and his stomach twists.

He knows he has to tell them. He wants to tell them. He just hopes they’ll be at least half as happy to see Bram as Simon knows he will be.

    Summary

"But what is he supposed to do when the life that is made for him, made to measure, the life he’s spent weeks and months and years building with Patrick, what is he supposed to do when that life intersects with a place that’s not meant for him?
That’s the problem, David thinks, reflecting back on this now, staring out of the window of a faceless New York hotel room, waiting for Patrick to come back to him, watching life go on, uninterrupted, below his feet, while he sits, stagnant and unmoving, his life as he knows it on pause, not knowing when he’s going to get it back.
It had all been so perfect, and David had been so comfortable in the rhythm of it, the predictable, steady cadence of Patrick’s love, that he’d forgotten to be scared.
He thought he was invincible, under the shelter of the life he’d built. Under the promise of I will make you so happy here. Now, here is thousands of miles away from them, an almost invisible speck in the distance, and David is back in a city he left behind years ago, a place that represents another lifetime, another understanding of truth, another David Rose."

or; David is done with New York, until he isn't, has dealt with it, until he hasn't.
