In the little house in Delecroix, Bucky sleeps on the couch. They don’t talk about the worn-down leather drum case or what it holds, not yet, but the case draws the eye. Whenever Sam’s eyes fall on the case he feels Bucky’s eyes on him. “White wolf,” he was called, in Wakanda, but to Sam “White Shadow” seems more apt.
He thinks they are that to each other—ghosts, phantoms, reminders. The conversation with Isiah Bradley wears on him. The man was haunted, damaged, bitter. The man was right, and Sam knew it.
He was wrong though, and Sam knows that too.
People are complicated.
This is my first attempt at a Rhink fic! The title & inspiration for this story come from the song "Bad Catholics," by the Menzingers.
I recommend you give it a listen, though it's not technically necessary to understand the story :P. All the Chapter Titles will be lyrics snippets. Unless I run out? No idea how long this is going to be.
In this AU, Link moved away for college and basically never came back to Buies Creek. He wanted to be a writer but is stalling creatively. With his current job as a teacher, he has summers off & decides to return home to get back to his roots and try to find his inspiration. He bumps into Rhett, for whom he used to carry quite a torch. The two drifted apart after high school and Rhett has settled into life back in Buies Creek. Link being back stirs something in them both.
Hunter, an ex army bouncer/bartender at a dance club in Paris, becomes enamored of a young writer who always sits at the end of the bar.

Lance Hunter had never been good at attachments. He’s sought them in strange places; when they fell apart it was alright, really, because what was he thinking? Marrying a gorgeous elite spy after falling in love with her alias—could he really be surprised when they didn’t fit together like June and Ward Cleaver? His best friend, of sorts, also had been a spy—more likely to charge in throwing knives than to go grab a casual pint. When she died in the line of duty, Hunter wasn’t surprised. Gutted, sure, but not surprised.
So, as Hunter leaned against the door jam, looking at one of his new team mates, Hunter found himself very much in pattern.
Getting attached in strange places.
So the lovely humans at Rhink Three Ways invited me to do a piece for their follower takeover. The prompt was Spirit for the "Angst" category. I highly recommend checking out the other contributions!
Link Neal: Musician. Singer. Rock Star. Asshole.
Until he got the chance to star in a Hollywood film that will finally launch him into a film career. He just needs to learn his lines, stop sleeping around until the film is completed, and learn how to play a classical guitar. No problem, until it is...
