Summary
During their explorations of Minas Tirith after Aragorn's coronation, Merry and Pippin accidentally disturb a long forgotten magic...and end up back in the Shire during the winter of 1332 (by Shire Reckoning) as children, but still with all their memories. They are rescued by Bilbo who takes them in and raises them for the next few years, up until the fine sunny morning when Gandalf appears in the Shire looking for a hobbit to join an adventure.
Merry and Pippin join the quest to reclaim Erebor, determined to change history for the better, but they don't know that Bilbo didn't tell them the whole story about his great adventure.

Summary
Bilbo Baggins had led a very long life indeed, so it was far from a surprise when he awoke in the afterlife.
It's very hard to say 'no' to a Vala, regardless of who you are. Especially when they're telling you it's your destiny to go back in time.
So although he doesn't really want to, Bilbo Baggins (as well as those who were once part of what was known as the Company of Thorin Oakenshield and the Fellowship of the Ring, though he does not know this) must make a choice.
Bilbo Baggins does not regret anything.
But perhaps this Vala is right.
It could always be worse, but it can also always be better.
(Yes, cliche time-travel fic. Yes, cliche fix-it. In case you're curious and lazy, no, not all of them choose to go back.)

Elves go bonkers over children. Children are precious, gentle beings that are so rare it's a miracle that one is born. Elves think children need to be coddled and protected. So how would they react if they found an elven child who was fiercely independent, borderline savage, and only liked one person in the whole settlement who was just as standoffish and distant from everyone like she is?
Or: I can't promise you much, but I can promise you an unconventional LOTR OC that is a) not a Tenth Walker, b) not in love with Legolas, and c) says the word 'fuck' with regularity.
