“We’ve passed five Floors!” Wangnan cheers when they return home. “I haven’t climbed this fast in ages! We should celebrate.”
“You’d better not be thinking of a bar.” Ehwa glares at him.
“Nah, I was just thinking we’d go out to eat or something. Save Viole the hassle of cooking,” Wangnan suggests. “We have some extra points from passing tests so quickly, too.”
They share glances for a second. “That sounds nice,” Goseng smiles. Miseng nods excitedly as well. A murmur of agreement ripples through the group.
Akraptor sneaks a glance at Viole. Viole didn’t say anything, but he hadn’t gone out with any of them ever, except for the times they went for groceries and other supplies. Wangnan had tried persuading him before, but with no success. Despite their team dynamic, it had generally become an accepted fact that Viole would never go out to have fun with them.
That makes Akraptor feel a bit guilty.

The stranger must’ve known he was found, too, because two dark blue eyes open, peering back at him from the shadows. It shifts, and a gust of icy wind blows past them, covering the body in a light dusting of frost.
Mine, the eyes claim.
So this was the heartbeat Bam had been tracking. But he’s not in the mood to get into a fight with another one of his kind, even if some of them were territorial. Just to check, he lightly pokes the stiff body with a smoky tendril.
There’s a threatening hiss. The temperature drops further.
Bam shuffles back slowly and melts back into the shadows. He can feel those piercing blue eyes on him, watching until he’s out of sight.
I’ll have to hunt for a different meal.
And in the morning, when the townspeople find two mangled bodies on opposite sides of the town, there are no culprits to blame.
