After Hannibal is arrested, the stork visits Will Graham. With it, it brings a baby, a legally binding birth certificate, and a hope chest full of gifts for her. Nobody except Will thinks this is weird. They are way more obsessed with finding out who the father is, and the media around the trial of Hannibal Lecter is alive with ideas.
(Alternatively, what if the Scarlet Letter was a dark romantic comedy?)

Hannibal has effectively replaced Will in every facet of his life by the time he is released from prison at the hands of the Chesapeake Ripper. The man takes his job, his friends, his one-time crush, and his pride.
In a spiteful random purchase made at a gas station, Will finds a way for two to play that game, and puts in motion a much wilder method of replacing Hannibal than he was really planning for.
