The ring glints on Emma’s finger, small and pretty and charming in a way that makes Regina want to snarl, and Emma smiles when she sees Regina staring at it.
“Do you like it?” Emma asks as she glances down at her hand then back to Regina, her cheeks flushed. “I still can’t really believe that it’s, you know, actually happening.”
“It’s lovely,” Regina says, her mouth pulling tight in a smile. She looks down into her lukewarm tea; anywhere but at that ring and Emma’s smile. “I’m sure your mother is excited to plan the wedding.”

“I’m so scared,” Regina says, the words slipping out even though she wants to swallow them down, down, down so she can be strong and sure and stop leaning on Emma like this. But she can’t keep it bottled up, too cracked and vulnerable without the pieces she tore out and threw away. “I don’t know what I would do if she took Henry. Or if she hurt you…our family—“
“I won’t let her,” Emma tells her. “No matter what, I will protect Henry. And you. You can count on me.”

Regina starts to say something to shut her down because nothing good will come from this, it’s why she’s never talked to Emma about it, but then Emma mumbles something and Regina stiffens.
“What did you say?” Regina asks, her throat tight.
“Was it after your mom died?” Emma asks, eyes wide as she looks at Regina. “I know he was running around and was involved in something back then but I never thought….” Emma trails off, her brow furrowed as she obviously struggles to put everything together and Regina just sits there, trembling, until, until-- “Regina, did he work with Tamara and Greg? What they did to you--he didn’t…. Did he help them?’
Regina closes her eyes and clenches her jaw and flinches at Emma’s sharp breath.
“Fuck,” Emma mutters. “Fuck. Regina, why didn’t you ever tell me?”

When Mary Margaret first brings up the possibility of marriage, Emma is too taken aback by the idea to shut the conversation down before Mary Margaret gets rolling.
“We haven’t really talked about it,” Emma says weakly, hoping that either someone will interrupt them or that will be enough of an answer to get her out of talking about this any further.
No such luck.
“Well, you and Regina have been together for two years now,” Mary Margaret says as she cocks her head to one side, a concerned look on her face. “Don’t you think it’s about time for things to move forward?”
