Summary
They are sitting on the same chair, no less, at the desk in the captain’s quarters. It’s a large chair, and neither of them are large individuals, but the fit is tight. There is a line of heat from where Caleb’s hip and his long leg presses against Essek’s. Caleb taps his boot against Essek’s as he works from memory, replicating the notes from Essek’s own spellbook to make use of the time Essek needs to transcribe. Essek bites the inside of his cheek. He doesn’t like to be dramatic, but given enough time, he can imagine dying of this.

Fjord holds out a hand for him, and then Essek breathes again. He begins to climb. He’s a fast learner, he always has been; and he’s learned that this group will be fine here, so long as they don’t have to drag him up the temple wall themselves.
“They’re almost here! C’mon!” Beauregard calls, looking back towards the pack of eelhounds.
“Keep climbing!” Fjord yells.
Essek doesn’t look back. He keeps pushing, even when the pain in his leg shoots up through his hip every time he pushes off with that side. The muscles of his legs and arms are still shaky, his heart pounding in his throat. He grits his teeth together. He can do this. One stone step at a time. He can hear Yasha as she growls, feral and angry. He’s almost at the top. One more step. One more.

Summary
The jungle is indeed hot, humid, and, despite the cover of foliage, uncomfortably bright. Yasha leads them through it, beating their way through underbrush with a greatsword that looks as though it probably weighs more than Essek himself. Caleb walks just behind her, keeping track of the group’s direction. Veth has shimmied up trees to scout, her stocky halfling limbs surprisingly nimble and sure. Caduceus has had an informative discussion with the local plants. Jester and Beauregard have made up a mildly obscene song and taught it to everyone. Fjord has tried to intimidate some vines. No one has suggested to Essek that he might contribute anything.
In hindsight, this trip was a stupid plan. The last three years, frankly, were a stupid plan. He’d wanted knowledge. All he has gained is a target on his back, the dubious benefit of hindsight, and a pit of regret inside him that grows deeper and more unbearable … and more recently, blisters.

Summary
Wrong Turn 'verse grew out of my kinkmeme action/comedy/UST-fest fic, Wrong Turn. I wrote a post-manga sequel to it, No Small Injury. NSI was plotted out in 2009, around the release of Chapter 98 of the manga. Some aspects of its post-manga plot inevitably got jossed. After finishing NSI, I worked out exactly where my 'verse diverged from canon events, and hammered Wrong Turn 'verse into a logical canon divergence 'verse. Much can be summed up as: "What if Olivia Armstrong hadn't survived the Promised Day?" Some of the ending AU is explored in stories, particularly the chapterfics and Curtain Call.

Awkward teenage fumbling, bickering, poorly-constructed tents, and occasional displays of competent teamwork ensue.
