“Oh gods,” Lan Xichen groans out and covers his face with his hands.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“You still do not understand our clan’s motto,” Ah-Die tells him sometimes, when he bothers to tell him anything at all. “It is not ‘attempt the impossible’, as so many believe. It means to know something is impossible and to do it anyway. You must learn to understand it. To live it as you live your life.”

Perhaps that understanding is impossible for someone like him, who can only ever follow the path laid out for him and struggle not to fall off. Who will never invent new cultivation techniques or develop unique weapons, because he is not special. He is ordinary; unremarkable. He has no lofty ideals like his brother, who wants to protect the world. He simply wants to protect his family, and since when is that something anyone admires?

Yet no one has ever said what the impossible is; or at least, no one has ever told Jiang Cheng.

Perhaps it is subjective. Perhaps impossible means different things for different people, and Jiang Cheng’s impossible is only for him, and yet might still be enough. If that is true, he can choose his impossible, and maybe it will be something worthwhile.

    Bookmarker's Notes

What destroys a person? A fall? A burst of flame, catching a dead body on the way down?

He walks all the way to the edge, breathing in thickly, but steadily. He remembers how the stink of the lava fields fused with the smell of blood and glowing corpses, red and red and red. Wei Ying’s ribbon fluttering as he fell.

Bones, they say. Nothing but bones.

He barely feels the heat. He sees nothing as he looks down into the deep, just jagged rock and pools of cooled lava. The fall is so far that all the grey blends together at the bottom.

There is a path there, winding down the side of the cliff, narrow and precarious. He could fly. He could even fall. But this is the way one would come up, and where one would search. Lan Wangji needs to see everything.
