“Oh no,” Wei Ying breathes. “Did I fuck it up? I was sure I’d gotten all the alcohol out. Lan Zhan, I’m so—”

There’s a nervous twist in the pit of Wangji’s stomach, and for a moment he wonders if he should say yes, that was it. Let Wei Ying believe he was drunk again. That that’s all it was.

But… he can’t. It would be a lie.

He straightens his shoulders and shakes his head slightly, fingers still curled around the back of Wei Ying’s neck. It helps when he realizes that that doesn’t seem to bother him—Wei Ying doesn’t seem to mind the touch, or want to shake it off.

“I’m not drunk,” Wangji says. “You didn’t make a mistake.”

A puzzled frown flickers across Wei Ying’s face as he takes in what Wangji is saying, Wangji’s hand still pressed against his warm skin.

Wangji swallows. “Did I?” he asks, quietly.

    Summary

Even when Lan Wangji was doing his best not to attach a face and a voice and a name to his fantasies, he felt slightly sick at himself for enjoying them. Intimacy was supposed to be about love. Love was supposed to be about giving the other person freedom, not holding them down in any way, literal or figurative. But he’s always been selfish deep down, has fought it harder than anything but never quite managed to drive it away. Something about Wei Ying always brings that selfishness in him out, makes him feel like it’s all right sometimes, and still. And still.

(or: LWJ manages to be both sadistic and masochistic at the same time, and then they have sex in a forest)

“Do you remember,” Wei Ying says into his mouth, “the night hunt on the Phoenix Mountain? You found me in the forest and told me you were still my soulmate. I wanted you to push me up against a tree and kiss me senseless.”

“I remember. I wanted it too.”

Wei Ying lets out a small “oof” as his back hits the trunk of the nearest tree, and draws him in closer with a quiet laugh. “If you’d done it, I would have run away, though. I was scared of how much I wanted you, back then.”

    “Are you still scared?”

“No,” there is a moment’s pause as Wei Ying reaches up into his own hair, and Lan Wangji watches as he undoes his red ribbon and his hair falls down around his face. Then Wei Ying shoves the crumpled fabric into his hands, followed by a light squeeze of his fingers. “But just in case, you better make sure I don’t run.”

Despite the half-joking tone, his eyes are serious, pupils blown wide. The hands are slightly shaking – just as his own are when he accepts the ribbon.

    “Wei Ying…”

Still looking him in the eye, Wei Ying shrugs the outer robe from his shoulders, letting it fall to the ground, and raises both arms to hook them over a thick tree branch, fingers curled into loose fists.

    “Hanguang-Jun.”

    Summary

The auntie freezes. “Ah,” she says, and swallows. “That is to say…” Her fingers tighten around the basket, and she goes on, despairingly, “Has Lan-er-gongzi not… spoken to you? Of the Thousand Freedoms spirit cleansing array and its… side effects?”

“A-yi,” Wei Wuxian says gravely, still petting the rabbit, “it is safe to say that he has not.”

“Jin Ling,” Wei Wuxian says softly, dropping down off the boulder into the grass. Lan Zhan nudges briefly against his ankle, before rearing up on his hind legs to peer out across the meadow as if dutifully picking up Wei Wuxian’s abandoned search.

“Shut up!” his nephew croaks, turning away, but not before Wei Wuxian catches a glimpse of the boy’s suspiciously bright eyes.

Wei Wuxian hesitates, hand outstretched, but at the end of the day, he is who he is: a servant’s son with too much affection and too little respect for the boundaries of propriety. He places his hand on his nephew’s shoulder.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Zhou Minglu has come from far to the west in need of aid from cultivators. From how he gazes at Lan Zhan, the many days of travel on foot were well worth it.

Wei Wuxian barely listens to the details of his concerns--something about a monster in a lake, the sort of thing the Chief Cultivator normally doesn't directly intervene in. He is too busy attempting to catch the eye of this young man, who apparently has never even heard of a water abyss, and also seems completely incapable of taking his eyes off of Lan Zhan.

Finally, it is too much. "Lan Zhan," he says, interrupting Zhou Minglu in the middle of another long series of compliments regarding the Chief Cultivator's skills and wisdom, "this sounds like the water abyss we encountered at Biling Lake all those years ago."
