When Eda makes the deal with Luz, she doesn’t really expect anything to come out of it. After all, she can feel the curse closing in around her, can feel the tendrils of magic curling around her heart a little more each day.
In truth, she does the deal on a whim— because the kid amuses her, and if there’s something she needs in her last days, it’s amusement.
She doesn’t expect to come to love her. And she most definitely doesn’t expect to feel whatever it is she feels for Camila Noceda.

Luz comes up with the perfect plan to introduce her mom to magic. Truly, it’s perfect. She’ll introduce her to Eda in the human world, and then, when her mom trusts her, Eda will be the one to prove to Camila that magic is real, because while her mom might think the Boiling Isles are part of Luz's imagination, surely she won't doubt another adult.
Eda, thinking there's little she wouldn't do if it means she can keep Luz by her side, goes along with it. After all, what could go wrong?

Summary
Gavin Reed has never been good at deciding who to trust. Except for Tina, his relationships have all gone up in flames, the last one making him decide never to open up to someone again. And then he meets Nines, and for the first time, Gavin wants to trust again.
That, of course, doesn’t go so well. Still, the stubborn android doesn’t go away, and Gavin is faced with a choice: having to look at and address his own bullshit, or driving away one of the few people that has ever fought for him.
It’s difficult for Gavin to believe things will be fine again.
But they will.

The doctor pulled out the teacher's chair and sat across from Steve, his hands folded and his face solemn and kindly. "It happens once in a while," he said. His voice was soft and gentle, and irrationally, it made Steve angry. Such ugly news ought to be delivered in a more fitting tone. "The most likely cause is that your intended mate died before you were born or shortly after they were born, before the bond had time to fully form. It's called a Type C or a Type--"
Steve wasn't interested in the terminology. "Is that why I'm... like this?" He gestured down at his frail, sickly body.
"Probably," the doctor said. "There are some further tests we can give you, down at the hospital, to determine--"
"Why bother?" Steve growled, slumping back in his chair and crossing his arms. "My mate is dead and no one else is going to want me, not like this." Tears stung his eyes and he blinked them back furiously.
"It's also possible, though less likely, that you're a Type A -- firstborn of the pairing -- but that your mate has simply not yet been born," the doctor said.
