    Summary

"Maggie stretched her arm farther, hoping she had got the worst of it, when her fingertips came in contact with a sleek feeling stack of paper, and immediately recognized it to be a magazine. Praying that it wasn’t some Playboy or some other vulgar nudie, she slowly pulled it out, her curiosity overcoming her knowledge that she should allow her son some privacy.

She let out a sigh of relief when she read the title. It was just some Sports Illustrated magazine, but instead of the swimsuit edition, it was just the most recent college baseball edition. Maggie huffs a laugh, eyebrows raised. She had no idea Richie was interested in baseball, why hadn’t he said anything?"

Maggie finds a copy of Sports Illustrated under Richie's bed while cleaning, and brings it up at dinner that night.

    Summary

Young Richie tilts his head, smirks, and announces, “I knew you’d stay pretty. Are we good, then?”

“Uh,” Eddie hesitates, noticing the way Richie’s hold has gone strict, and hard around his arm again, “Good? What do you mean?”

“You have a wedding ring on!” young Richie observes cheerfully, pointing at Eddie’s free hand, “So, it becomes legal? People know?”

    “Know what?” Eddie wonders.

“Eddie,” Richie says too softly, “Please. Stop. We need to leave.”

    “We’re married, aren’t we?”

The first shoe is dropped, and Eddie watches in shock as young Richie steps aside, to show the fresh ‘R + E,’ he’s carved into the wood.

    Summary

Richie runs all the way to Eddie’s. He has a bike but he can’t remember, just now, where he put it. Everything feels real, feels — the gravel hurt his shoeless feet, his lungs burn when he gets tired, there’s a cut on his chin that aches a little. It feels real but things always felt real, with It.

You can’t trust how you feel or what you see. That’s the core of the terror of It. That everything is real and nothing is real and all of it can kill you.

Richie clambers up the drainage pipe and shoves open Eddie’s window. He’s afraid to look. He’s afraid of what It has prepared for him.

But it’s nothing. It’s just Eddie, small, young, cast still on his arm. He’s curled up on his side and is using the cast as the world’s worst pillow.

“Holy shitballs what the fucking shit,” breathes Richie, lunging forward to fling himself on top of Eddie’s sleeping form. “Don’t scream, don’t scream, hey — Eddie! Eddie, shut the fuck up, you’re going to wake your mom, it’s me! It’s me.”

    Summary

Richie was never good at telling the truth, he was never good at keeping secrets either, but he was absolutely certain of two things.

Eddie would always be there to bandage him up, and Richie could never tell Eddie about what his parents do to him.

    Summary

Crouched like this, Richie is more or less level with Eddie, and it's easy to wind his arms around Richie's neck, push off on his good foot, and clamber onto his best friend's back. Richie's hands reach out for him, one broad palm clasping the back of his thigh and the other ending up higher —

'Richie,' Eddie shrieks, 'that's not my leg!'

'Whoops!' Richie laughs nervously and shakes his deviant hand as if burnt.
