    Summary

    That night, with Appa snoring next to them and Katara snuggled against his shoulder, Aang breathed and counted. He raked his mind for very little tradition, every little custom, everything he could remember about Air Nomad culture. Otherwise, it dies with me, he’d thought, suddenly terrified. It dies with me.

    At ten, you become responsible for your own air bison. They’re companions for life. At eleven, each airbending child gets the chance to visit the wenwú shí of their Temple. At twelve, the standards become higher; assisting the air nuns and monks is your top priority. Thirteen, the first taste of travel; at the Eastern Air Temple, the Shēnqíng de hú will be the start of your spiritual journey. Fourteen is the age of enlightenment; with the mastering of your element, the arrows start being drawn over your skin.

    It’s a long process, and a sacred one. Each age brings with it something new; with each age, something grows.

    Needless to say, Aang hasn’t gotten a lot of experience with that.

    Or, Aang never really stops grieving. Featuring Air Nomad culture, birthdays, and a conversation on a rooftop.

    Summary

    /jux·ta·po·si·tion/ n. the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with a contrasting effect.

    John Watson, sixteen-year-old new boy at St. Bartholomew's School, is assigned resident genius and nuisance Sherlock Holmes to be his roommate. While contending with schoolwork, exams, sports, friends, foes and family, they are entangled in a web of mysteries that soon seem far from coincidences. Will they be able to work out who is behind them - and, scarier still, will they admit that their friendship has grown into something more before it is too late?

    [TL;DR: Boarding school AU. Our protagonists wind up as roommates.]

    Summary

    Rain in the desert is breathtaking, completely alien after a lifetime of British downpours.

    John remembers vividly the distinct crackle and rumble of the heavens before they open, before the Afghan sands are drenched in water untinged by the smog of a busy city. He remembers the way everything stops, the way every living thing from the tiniest, hardiest plants to the bloodthirstiest Taliban pause for the duration of the rainstorm to simply sit back and watch the miracle of nature. John remembers even the rushed, everlasting thrum of his field hospital slowing at the rarity.

    The photo is decent - John, sat in front of a field hospital window, gazing out at the torrential rain with a faintly wistful smile on his face.

    The video is different.

    You can hear it.

    ///

    John has a tin of memory sticks, all full of videos and photos and memoirs of his time in the army. The Fusiliers (and others) put it all together and gave it to him just before he was shipped out. It lives in his wardrobe now, to keep away from a prying Sherlock, but the hinges remain well-used, and the videos are watched often.
