Rey looked at him for a long moment, and Ben thought she might slap him. She didn’t. She started to laugh, shaking her head as if she couldn’t quite believe it. Finally, she said, smiling, “Goodnight, Ben.”
Ben turned and walked slowly back to his car. He heard her door creak open, but he didn’t hear it slam shut. It felt as if he was walking away from his chance, from his chance to have something good and uncomplicated and nice.
Ben turned around, and went back to the door. Rey waited for him, biting her lip. He took off his stocking cap and held it in his hands in front of himself. His ears were cold without his hat, but he was in the posture of remorse and penance. "I'm sorry. I'm an ass. Can I kiss you again?"

“Hi!” The woman the voice belongs to—Rey, he thinks, this must be Rey Jackson, the usurper—walks over to him, wiping hands covered in green paint on a flower-patterned apron splattered with glitter. Ben furrows his brow as he looks at her, taking in her freckles, the dimples he can see even when she's barely smiling, her long limbs, all elbows and knees (coltish, he thinks, before he can stop himself), her hair up off her face in three, yes, three buns. He is supposed to be angry with her, he's pretty sure, but he can't remember why.
“Sorry,” she says, her eyes dimly confused, “are you a parent?”
He quickly remembers why.
Ben, a counselor in the upper school at the legendary Alliance Academy, keeps finding himself interacting with the lower school art teacher, Rey. He definitely doesn’t like it.

As Rey grows up in a country which officially isn't at war, even though its consequences are felt everywhere, she forms a strong bond with Kylo, an odd young man whose personal involvement in the conflict may run deeper than it seems. Years go by, the war rages on and the political plots thicken, and Rey must learn the difference between idealism and doing the right thing, discovering the price of personal happiness.
Also known as "what happens when you take the Star Wars plot and put it in a real place, in a real time, in a real war." Comes with lots of swearing, awkward flirting, old characters in new roles, angst, feels, drama, fluff, all-round Slavic shenanigans, and references to some pretty cool music.
